Today was relatively productive. sanded back the bonnet and roof. and hit a few random spots with the angry grinder.

Roof still needs work to remove the rest of the rust spots. A pillars need alot more work, but not too much welding luckily. I'll treat the rust that's left in a few of these spots, then later on high fill and smooth them, (ie on the bonnet]

    Pics:

worst of the rust I've found so far. will need new metal.

all the red spots are texta, and the spots that need to be taken back to bare metal, like all the other bare metal patches are currently.

      window openings..

So how is all the window openings looking ?? nothing like the rust that grows under the damned seals...

Dunno what you think however with the rocco I was considering using a small sandblaster to clean out the rust and paint, then lead wipe the areas where the seal actually sits and dress that back to the correct profile. The lead tins the bare steel giving it maximum corrossion resistance, then do the primer and paint over the top of that..

Maybe check out with one of the tech colleges if they do adult education in car bodywork ( they do this here in the west along with a great course on automotive painting and upholstery )

Think rabbitparts are still selling the rear lower corner repair sections also.
saw some in UK last trip as well but cant think of the vendor...
      Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

      Cheers,
      Grant...

Sandblast would be great for the front window seal area. Would clean it up very well. I'll get rid of as much of the rust as I can and go from there. Atm, there are only one or two very small holes.

I don't mind if it's not perfect, as this is only meant to be a cheap get about/project, not my "ulitmate golf" build. Having said that, I won't be cutting corners in a safety respect. I will have to look into lead filling, or similar a metal filler though.

        I have my crashed 3 door for parts, so any sections I need I should be able to take/mod from my 3 dr. same goes for the rear lower corner. There's a few bubbles under the rear window, so no doubt there will be some there too. I havn't taken the window out yet, cause I don't want to wreck the rubber, and don't really want to smash the glass {although I have a spare}

yell.... I'm trying to get as much of the stuff that needs welding prepared, so hopefully we can hit it in one go. Maybe this weekend, I'll let you know.

                      Today's work.

Bit more rust removal and removal of the door windows & chrome trim. only 1 or 2 of the outer scrapers are worth using again, the other's are knacked. I have some spare bits lying around though. Maybe I'll swap which side the rubbers are meant to be on and have it Cal look?? Phenominally harder job than it should be. Also interesting to note a few of the difference between early and later model doors. or maybe it's aussie built and german built ??

I'll take the doors off soon, one by one, and treat them for rust. Still have to get the front fenders off, damn seam sealer...grrrr...

Yea, I'm super glad my floors are clean. Luckily non of the other rust spots are too serious.

Plenty of work to be done yet. yay..
