Do you burn your bed rather than change the sheets?

I think they're looking good - with the right resources and skills at hand (like the OP) these are going to look fantastic.
I'm stoked it is happening in Perth

Would like to see something that isn't a straight MK1 restore - perhaps a lightweight track car

Great to see you are saving these cars. What the hell happened to the two door's dash?

^^ agreed with that, both about the saving of them and what the hell did happen to that dash!?
          never seen one that bad!
rust in those pics doesnt look all that bad either.

i love the amount of mk1 resto jobs that are going on these days, and we could always do with a few more!
          keep it up son

Yea dunno what the hell went on with that dash... Gremlins? Hungry driver??
As far as whether its worthwhile saving these cars or not; we are enthusiasts aren't we? My GF's grandfather is an MG club lifetime member and those old blokes hang on to every single part/panel they possibly can because over the years they've seen the availability drop, the prices rise, and also the classic status of their "investments" rise (along with their value). At the same time obviously, the cars are getting older and parts are increasingly breaking/rusting or whatever.
Unfortunately a buttload of mk1's have already been destroyed when there were heaps of perfectly good body sections/panels and other parts still on the cars.

So obviously thats what we're doin. Any cars that are structurally ok will be restored.. but if its had it, then its had it.

Are you guys planning on concourse style restorations or... some 20VT MK1 madness?
I'm keen to see the surgery unfold.
                Scalpel please. Suction....

Yea there's a heap of work to be done on those cars. once a week when we are struggling for room and about to kill each other we think about selling one off but luckily that idea is put in the "to do" basket with everything else!!
We'll probly just do one or two cars at a time, might convert the GLD into a modern TDI 1.6 from a caddy or something??
We'd like one or two attention grabbing Golfwagen-wagons to run errands in and a slammed mk1 with some signage and a unique engine would be perfect, but what Joe really wants is a mk1 Caddy.

He's decided to put the mk3 2.0l 8v in the dark blue 3-door.

I'll most likely sand back my red 3-door to the metal to see how bad it is and strip it out for racing only (hillclimbs, superkhana's) and run the standard lump and box to keep it within its correct class.
                  The light blue one? Undecided....

We've been too busy to think about them lately tho

Well, it's been a while... and still nothing has been done. Time and space are becoming a major issue.
I'm going to have to move my red car out before i head off to europe so i'll stuff it full of all my mk2 bits and take it away.

Trouble is, I had a thorough look at the floors, the rear end and the front left corner on Friday evening and discovered some nastiness.
Its been shunted up the back pretty hard at some point and the repairs have begun to come apart again, what's left of the floor is just crumbling away hopelessly and its right up to the inner sills.
The front corner is also even more skew than I first thought: They've welded the left front guard on to secure it onto the bent front panel!!

So it looks like I will have to strip the good bits and find another 2-door to restore.

But first I have to finish the mk2!

This will be a slow thread...:ballandchain:

                        sent to the scrappas!

Ok, so this one was too far gone. I shoulda listened to roccodingo haha!
I raped it for its good bits tho.
In the meantime however i have found two other mk1 3-door's in the hills.
One is another roughie that has more of its floor left, which will now be my future race car, and one is a German made car which will be restored OEM.
More on those later. Dont ask where i'm gonna store them

Say goodbye... its off to the big Wolfsburg in the sky...

hey mate you should cut out the rear side pannels of the 2doors so you can repair 2 doors and maybe convert 4 doors into 2
                              cheers brenton

nah, the thing had a shunt up the rear at some point , otherwise i would have kept it..

I do salvage straight panels from end of life vehicles...

                                Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
