I only use 98. 95 if I was really stuck, but haven't yet.

I only use 98 as it's required in a Golf R but my 118TSI Tiguan also gets 98 as I find it runs smoother on it.

Where are you getting 97 from? I can't say I've ever seen it.
Personally I wouldn't use anything but 98. I've only ever had to use 95 once, and that was in country NSW with no other options

In my T5 van 2.0 petrol I use 95 inside the fuel cap it says 91 to 95 but because Australian refineries don't have a decent quality control with RON levels , if I use 91 it pings and runs out of grunt 95 is fine . A neighbour works in the oil industry and he warned me not to trust the oil companies to maintain correct RON levels as it deteriorates between maintenance at the refinery , apparently they have to do upgrades often to keep the fuel correct so when it is getting close to maintenance the RON deteriorates .

                  ^^ What he said

There is no significant extra performance with higher octane fuels. It is all a placebo effect.

The only thing using a higher octane fuel does is to further enrich the already over flowing coffers of the oil industry.

Most fuels are imported from overseas mainly from Singapore and some brands may add their special potions to differentiate it. If a fuel is dodgey, it is probably as a result of poor storage at the servo. I try to buy my fuel from high turnover stations so the fuel is fresh.

Really? My understanding was that higher octane fuels are better for high-compression cars as they have better anti-knock properties.

If it is placebo, why does my R state it as the required fuel (as did my high-compression twin charged Mk5 GT Sport)?

I think he's saying running higher Octane than the car requires isn't worthwhile and any improvement is placebo. Not that there isn't a difference between low and high Octane fuels.

98 in my Jetta as required. 98 in our Fabia just because the price difference is minimal and it gets marginally better consumption figures.
