  • Penrite Enviro+ 5W-40 (Plus 10)

A few of us are using this oil (rather than the 5W-30)

It's referred to as "mild SAPS" (the 5W-30 is low SAPS)

It's now got some approvals (not 504/507 - because of SAPS level?)

    Product Benefits:
MANUFACTURER APPROVED product to maintain vehicle warranty
LATEST oil technology for less wear, sludge & piston deposits
EXTRA 10 provides an EXTRA LAYER of engine protection
Maximises DPF life and engine performance
Suitable for a wide range petrol and diesel engines
    Emmisions system friendly
    Extend exhaust catalyst life
Protects against engine sludge and engine deposits
    Long drain intervals

    Approvals:
    VW 502.00/505.00
    GM dexos2TM Licensed
    Porsche A40
    MB-Approval 229.51
    BMW Longlife-04
    Key Specifications:
    API SN/CF, ACEA C2/C3
    MB 229.31
    VW 505.01
2012.1 Skoda Octavia VRS DSG Wagon - Carbonio cold air intake and pipe - HPA Motorsports BBK 355mm rotors 6 pot calipers
APR Stage II ECU - APR 3" exhaust down pipe & high flow catalyst
APR/HP Roll bars - Eibach springs and Bilstien shocks
Supaloy lower control arms - Enkei 18*8 Wheels

VW oil specification 502.00/505.00 is more flexible in terms of viscosity grade, allowing 10W-40, 5W-40, 0W-40, 5W-30 & 0W-30 grades. Depending on the additive type, 502/505 can either be formulated as a full SAPS product, or a mid SAPS product.

VW oil specification 504.00/507.00 on the other hand, appears to be restricted to a single viscosity grade of 5W-30. 504/507 is more of "low-to-mid SAPS" oil specification.

Other "mid SAPS" oil specifications, such as BMW LL-04, GM dexos2 or MB 229.51, are more flexible in terms of the allowable range of viscosity grades. (As an aside, it's rather nice to see a product made by a local company with actual manufacturer approvals).

Hypothetically speaking, Penrite Enviro+ 5W-40 may well pass all of the performance requirements of 504/507 if it were to be tested by Volkswagen, but it still would not be allowed to obtain 504/507 approval because of the viscosity grade.

In any case, Penrite Enviro+ 5W-40 has obtained VW 502/505 approval, so it can be used without risk to the vehicle's warranty.

Having said that, if usage patterns or circumstances do not require an xW-40 grade oil, I think it would be better to stick with an xW-30 grade oil to maximise overall efficiency (minimise friction, minimise heat, minimise fuel consumption and maximise power output) where possible.

That might be a saving on the track. having a slightly heavier weight oil. might also fix some oil consumption problems that TSI engines suffer from.

That's exactly why I have been using it for ~6+ months
Unfortunately Plus10 has made no change to the oil consumption of my TSI engine
But I do like to think the 40 weight offers a little more protection when under pressure

I don't mind the oil consumption, its more the track and hard driving protection I'm looking for.

Haven't tried Mobil 1. But being FIAT approved I'm using it in the 500 and its running REALLY well.

It has a higher resistance to burn than other approved oils, so it could be worthwhile to try using it in your highly tuned engine.

I've been using the Penrite 5W-30 and 5W-40 for 18 months - very happy with it
I also used Liqui Moly once - seems fine - hard to notice any difference other than price

Here are some oil prices at SuperCheap:
                  Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30 $78
                  Penrite Enviro+ 5W-40 $58
                  Valvoline SynPower XL-III 5W-30 $55 (VW 504/507 spec)

I've always liked Valvoline and had good experiences with it - so I grabbed a few bottles for the next oil changes
(I'm changing oil every 10,000km which is every 20 weeks - almost 3 times a year)

I put the Liqui Moly Engine Protect (MOS2) stuff through the engine
After 1 or 2 thousand km I noticed the engine makes a nicer sound when reving on the down hill over run
(I also put the Nulon version into the wife's Mazda3)
2012.1 Skoda Octavia VRS DSG Wagon - Carbonio cold air intake and pipe - HPA Motorsports BBK 355mm rotors 6 pot calipers

                    Enviro+ 5W40 is cheaper than 5W30? hmmm

That's quite normal, since they're different oils for different applications.

very true, and possibly due to popularity of a particular weight would probably define a higher price

Last oil change on the wife's Mazda3 I used a fully synthetic Nulon
The engine now sounds very good and is reving freely
I'm going to continue using it for sure

I was using Nulon in my SR20s for a long time. STILL wouldn't put it in the RS though. ill stick to penrite.

Looking at a 7500km oil change on the TSI Amarok. Thinking Castrol Edge 5W-30 .... but may go with 5W-40 instead given the Amarok is now nudging 220kw ..... any ideas on which is better?

                              Or alternative suggestions?
