Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VW Oil Drain Tool (T40057)

Hey guys - does anybody know anywhere in Australia (other than a dealer) that might sell the VW Oil Drain Tool?

eBay/Google keeps pointing me to the US/UK at a cost of $80 + $30-$180 shipping.

    Yeah...that's right... $180 shipping.

Surely a bit of rubber tube with a brass bit on the end doesn't cost $80. Or does it?

The shipping costs from the USA are out of control.

You don't need the tool. I've serviced heaps of cars with this setup. You can push the valve up, and to the side with a flat-blade screw driver to drain the housing. Just make sure you pop it back into it's seat when you're done draining.

I serviced my friends MK5 GTi a few weeks ago, which has the same oil filter setup as the Golf R and i just used a flat blade screwdriver to raise the valve which allows the oil to drain out. As mentioned above, just be careful the valve sits back in the right spot once you remove the screw driver.

ECS Tuning have this drain tool available if you are still interested: http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Oil_Drain/ES8616/

Another option (which i have on my own car) is the aluminium filter housing from ECS tuning. It gets rid of the valve (which is notorious for leaking) and has a simple drain plug and washer (similar setup to the sump).
