Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Poor paint quality & How to fix/protect (Candy White 6R Polo)

The paint on my 2010 6R Polo is shocking. I've never seen a car stone chip so badly before in my life. There are stone chips all over, and each one has cut straight through the paint to grey metal or primer (unsure).

    1. Is this normal? I thought the car had just led a hard life till I put a couple of my own stone chips into it and realised it just chipped REALLY easily.

    2. What do I use to fill in the chips. (Paint pen, chip kit, Duplicoat, etc, which brand?)

    3. What can I do to protect the paint. Obviously waxing doesn't help. Opticoat? Nano coats? etc.?

keep your distance and you will greatly prevent stone chips.

Should have bought a Red one. My wifes is 4.5 years old and hasnt got a chip on it anywhere.

But then she doesnt tailgate or park it just anywhere in a car park.

3 M clear film helps but costs about $400 to do the bonnet and bumper.

Too late after it has been chipped though

I have this exact issue on my Golf GTI. The bonnet is getting worse and worse.

I barely drive the car, so I dont think the new ones are from stone chips. Maybe a paint defect / issue.

Will have to get it looked at, as I have found 2 more down the side of the car ..... rear door.

Touch up paint from the service centre. That's what I'll be doing. At least that way its the candy white shade. My front has stone chips from previous owner....

I tailgate when people don't keep left unless overtaking. Bonnet is full of stone chips, and been through 2 windscreens in 6 months. Currently in the process of touching up, sanding, touching up, sanding etc and modifying my driving manners in a bid to have a nice looking car. Meanwhile, the majority of Sydney drivers are still arrogant (insert word here).

The paint on both my Mk6 R (united grey) and my current Mk6 GTI (candy white) are excellent. As a keen detailer, the quality of paint is high on my list of wants. If anything, the paint on the GTI is a better finish, despite more wear and tear (GTI was purchased 2nd hand so the fist 3-4 years of its life was not polished etc - whereas i had the R from brand new).

The paint is hard, quite thick, very resistant to scratches and swirls (because its hard), very resistant to environmental damage such as rain spots/bird poo's etc. Both cars have few few stone chips although this may be because i rarely travel on highways and when i do i always keep a nice distance from other cars.

I could only wish my wife's Mazda SP25 had the same paint..........extremely thin and soft paint (so it scratches and chips easily) and quite alot of orange peel which reduces the shine and looks crap. Her car with not even 20,000km on it has more stone chips on the front bumper/bonnet than my GTI with 85,000km.
