Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Bonnet Paint Blemish

    Hey Guys,

So... Yesterday I was getting the car ready for a Wedding and I noticed on the bonnet these Blemishs on the bonnet!?!?!

I always keep the car spotless and if there is anything dropped on it at all it gets washed.. All I use for wash is the Marguires Wash N Wax and has been perfect...

I don't know what it is, its like the paint is peeling off it? Its in two different area's of the bonnet (away from heat source like turbo, as its down the front) It looks like something has eaten through the clear coat...
Has any one had something like this before? It's so strange...

Also its never parked in the sun, at home its parked in the shed and at work its underground car park...

^ appears that way - have you had any bird or bat poos on the car lately? Or parked anywhere where someone could have done something to the car (like putting brake fluid or acid on the car to ruin the paint) either on purpose or by accident?

Yeah... But like I said, If I noticed that I would of washed it off straight away, and I haven't washed any bird or and poo off from both of those area's.... I know brake fluid can do some pretty bad damage, however if it was on purpose it would be a lot worse then what it is and more over the car like that... it kinda looks like its chipped away???

VW have 10 years on paint and corrosion. So time to take it for assessment I guess

The clear coat has definantly been etched by bird poo or bat vomit. Depending how hot it was at the time, it could of only been a short amount of time for the damage to be done.

The only way to repair is a respray and I doubt it will be covered by VW warranty as it is not a manufacturing defect.

100% not bird poo.. and if it was bat vomit what colour is it? is it clear? Like I said I haven't cleaned anything off both of those area's on the bonnet... It was clear when I washed it (I would of noticed bird poo or type of subtenants on it)

                Could it have been egg'd?
Egg white dries clear and can eat clear coat.

lol, nah mate - I would of noticed egg shells and yolk... and it would been all up the car...

I wash this thing once a week, every weekend... just by bucket and hand.. Also another thing I noticed on the front plastic (where the R logo is) it looks like something similar has happened but to the plastic (under the lip of the bonnet) it looks like there is a spot where the black paint has just peeled off... that happened abit over a month ago.. I was seriously upset when that happened :'(

Time to get VWA involved. I'm one handshake away from a gentleman who got their 9 1/2 year old Touareg fully resprayed which was exhibiting similar issues. That car was totally abused for it's entire life.

clear coat failure does happen even on today's cars. I would claim warranty of poor manufacturing

                        That's what I'm thinking.

There is another stone chip at the front or lip of the bonnet, and its gone down to the primer and about 1cm around it the clear coat has come off too..

I don't understand, every single stone chip I have on this car goes all the way through to the primer...

So over a month had past and I still haven't heard back from VW. I had to chase them up 3 times before I got a call back saying from photo's the guy took at the dealer in their 'professional' opinion it was bird\bat poop.

I asked for it to be look at again because I think that is not acceptable for them to judge by the 'Photos' that where taken from an iPhone...

After all this time I never looked on Google images to check what bird\bat poop actually does to paint. From the images I am seeing the damage is nothing like it! With ALL the one's I saw had a white outlining or white bits or looked like crows feet.

                          My Damage...

Ok.... Now I'm starting to get really mad! :<

So I took the car to a panel beater here in Canberra last week and they are meant to be the best in Canberra, and they seemed to think it was Bird Poop aswell... I thought I would let it go and just get it resprayed by myself until today.... I washed the car (hand wash) and I found more.... No where near the size of 'bird poop' and its just not likely that it was bird droppings to where its happening on the bonnet and the size.. If you were to tell me a flock of birds came and pooped on it to make this happen, I'm going to laugh at you because your an idiot... :\

                            Some photos...
