Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Nail Polish on Leather Seats

Does anyone have a suggestion for cleaning nail polish off leather seats?
A bottle broke in the heat and the polish has dried on the leather.

The vehicle user manual will have a suggestion for how to clean the upholstery with various kinds of contaminants.

You can use acetone to remove nail polish, but I dont think it would be good for the leather.

Nail polish remover can be less harsh than acetone but I have no idea what it would do to the seats (its acetone based but has other things in it).

Either way I think the car user manual would advise against either of the things i just suggested

Unfortunate truth is that it may be stuck there forever. DO not use acetone on the seats as you can damage and also remove the dye.

Non-acetone nail polish remover is probably the best to use, with a cotton bud or even paper towel and dab very very lightly. Small applications of removal is safest as you can see what may happen.

Best you condition the seats afterwards as well with something such as Duragloss Leather Conditioner!

AJD: Iv'e had some success removing all sorts of stuff from car seats using Eucalytus oil (the real stuff, not the pretend kind). As others have advised, care needs to be taken not to cause a bigger problem. I would dab a bit on the leather somewhere where it doesn't matter if it lifts the colour. I suspect that a lot of patience and good luck will be needed, but I empathise with your plight!
Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

          LOL.

I've just looked up Shannon Lush's SPOTLESS & she says use proper acetone & not nail polish remover.

To the OP: I'm pretty sure Shannon Lush has a website. She's a professional restorer. I'd ask her, she's pretty cluey on both the theory & practical & has a couple of books on the subject.
