Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      I did?

I actually did a very gentle first pass with 60 grit sandpaper just to loosen everything and get all the crap off the lenses. That stuff is hardcore so be careful if you intend to do it, because it'll take chunks out of the paint.

I wrapped the emery paper around a sanding block because it is so fine, and just started dry sanding. But I found that if I wet the lens (as opposed to the paper) it worked just as well. So yes, the emery paper became wet so technically I wasn't WD sanding, but still... the results speak for themselves.

I didn't think lenses that bad would turn out as well as they did?

Plastic polish is pretty good for any light marks or small scratches you may have, but something this caked needed some heavy duty treatment.

I found that Plast-X was great for finishing it off and buffing the lighter swirls once I'd finished sanding the h3ll out of those lenses

Sorry, I only assumed you wetsanded with emery sandpaper cos of the soapy water in the pics!

You make a good point, as I actually soaked the other papers in the soapy bucket, whereas I didn't soak the emery paper.

Getting the emery paper wet didn't seem to effect the result in any way, although I'm not sure if keeping it completely dry may have made for a better result?

Because 1500 was all I had? But it seemed to work OK

You can use emry paper with liquid for wet sanding, but don't expect it to last long. The Paper and glue are not waterproof but it still will work for 15-30 min of polishing etc. Just don't hope to use it the next day!

Wet/Dry Paper is best used wet as the paste made from the liquid and removed particles makes for a finer finish.
Also you can wash the W/D to remove any particles, let dry, and use it later on or the next day or next week... it can be reused over and over again till it is useless.

Just a tip... Get yourself new W/D sheets if doinf your heradlights.
do not use old pre used W/D that was used on metal... this could cause scratches from the left over metal filings - or worse embed the filings into the plastic only to rust.

                    Thanks for your advice Gigitt.

I used it for about 15 minutes on each lens before it was pretty much shot to bits, but as you can see the results were pretty good.

I soaked the other sheets and it got really pasty and gluggy but did make for quite a good friction to get the lens covers down to the good plastic. It was then up to the finer grade papers and polishes to get the clear finish you see in the final photos.

Not a bad effort for a rank amateur
