Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Do I need an adaptor for my Bluetooth capable iPod ?

I haven't got my 2013 Yeti TDI yet but would like to know if my 8pin iPod needs an adaptor to power it via the 3.5mm plug?
Is Bluetooth (streaming) the way to go?
Is the SD card a better way?
Being on the wrong side of retirement age makes it a challenge. and sorry if it's been done to death.

All options you've listed will work well, but I'd personally favour an SD card for something that can just be left in the car and requires zero care and maintenance once you've loaded up your music. You can get some very high capacity SDXC cards these days for not much money. Then maybe use your iPod for Bluetooth streaming of content that changes regularly eg podcasts.

Do you still have your iTunes library on yr computer after downloading to yr SD card? If so, how do they stop you 'sharing' it with friends? I thought apple wouldn't want that.

      and the cable?..

Every lock has a key. I loaded heaps of my ITunes library onto an SDcard and from there onto my HDD in the 510. However they were in the library from another folder on the computer.

Wouldn't have thought a 3.5 socket would be powered

My socket in the centre console only plays from the headphone socket on my old Iphone and therefore doesn't charge it

I don't know Just that a audio ACC socket wont have power

Usually use the Apple USB cable on those devices or a Ciggy plug depending on the voltage required USB usually has 5V so possibly
need a 12/5V stepdown Ciggy plug.

I have an MDI unit so didn't have the problem

Digital Rights Management (DRM) on tracks you've purchased will prevent you from sharing files with friends.

Your iTunes library should be unaffected by copying your music to an SD card.

I don't think you will be able to power/charge your iPod from the 3.5mm socket.

Does your Yeti have an MDI interface? If so, that will solve your problems of charging and playback. If not, charge via USB.

Yeah mine were all from ripped CD's I own or from the net so I could copy them to what I like It seems an ITunes library is only an index of what I put in from the Folder of music which was on a different drive.

The 3.5 cable is audio only from the headphone socket of a device usually, to and audio in connector in the car.

                  Scobb,
I just don't know where the MDI plug is in the car and the iPod is a nano 8pin. Maybe I need an adaptor for it too.

Your car has to be fitted at extra cost to have an MDI connector usually in glovebox or as in new Golf in console

This is what a Passat one looks like with the cable in it

This is the cable that connects Apple products to a MDI interface which allows you to play music from it and have full wheel button control.

And it was explained to me that 'streaming' only relates to your phone. (Excuse my backwardness)
My son showed me how to load my SD card so I'm quite happy with that......don't know much about my selection options using this method though.
Even I will eventually get there, at least I hope so.

I have 18gb on an SD card Several thousand tracks They were all loaded individually and play randomly Is a bit of a mission to pick any particular track out but I just let it play and forward it if I don't like the one playing at the time

Apple dumped DRM on their music a couple of years ago, if you buy it online (or use iTunes Match) it's encoded with your name and account details but there is no physical reason you can't copy it off and give it to a friend. Legally it's a licence agreement you're breaking.

Long story short, you can use the iPod, an SD Card, burn some CD’s (or even a Data DVD full of songs I believe) and use that without issues.

If you use iTunes already, are comfortable there and want to continue using that you can create a play list as normal then just drag those songs to an SD Card. Dead simple.

                            The MDI Interface
The MDI interface is great for use with an iPod, in fact I purchased an iPod classic for each of our cars as we got them so I could load my entire library onto that and just leave it in the car. I just pull it out and re-sync it from time to time to capture any new play lists or music I might have acquired.

But your problem is the lightning connector (8 pin connector) vs the older 30 pin connector used on the older iPods. You can get this adaptor from Apple (or a knock off from eBay):
Lightning to 30-pin Adapter - Apple Store (Australia)
or this one if you have a case:
Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) - Apple Store (Australia)

Theoretically this will provide both power to the device AND audio back to your head unit… but in my testing with my eBay knock off it never worked as well with my iPhone 5.

Plan B is to get a different iPod dedicated to car music with a 30 pin connector.

Bottom line I think that an iPod full of music works better than an SD card full of music through the menu system, especially with larger libraries.

                            Bluetooth
Bluetooth steaming tends to polarise people. Some people think it’s utter crap quality and hate it, others think it’s perfectly fine. I fall into the later group. Lately I find myself using bluetooth to stream audio from my phone rather than the iPod. For me the iPhone tends to be synced far more often so the music and playlists are more up to date and it’s already sitting in a hard mounted dock with permanent power so I don’t have to worry about battery.
If your phone already had the audio on it, why bother with another device?

If you want do want to use you’re iPod over bluetooth you probably want to think about how you’re going to power it. Again, if you have an iPhone why not invest in a decent hard mounted dock with permanently wired power and ensure your phone is charged, meet your legal requirements for in car use and get to listen to your music

                            AUX IN
Yes it works just like plugging in headphones but just feels like the dodgy cheap way to do things. (like those old school headphone to cassette adaptors you could get in the late 90’s for hooking up your discman to your tape deck ).

You still need power, there is no control over what you’re listening to via the head unit… Just not a fan at all.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

my samsung s3 is 'only 16 GB so I went the 'cheap n nasty' minimalist SD route.
Was surprised that my 09 Falcon was wired for my iPod and simply expected the same in the Yeti.
                              Thanks again.
