Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2017 Maps Update

You may have read elsewhere that Betsy was excited about new maps.

Head over here Update portal to check if there is an update available for your car. You’ll need your VIN to see if an update is available.

If there is an update available, and you want to install it, then read along for some tips as I stumble through the process.

Do the clickie thing on the web page for the link that you see in the green box that says “Download maps”.
Wait a little while for the download to complete. Now would be the perfect time to concrete that driveway or start writing the novel you’ve always wanted to write.
One other thing to do would be to buy (or find) an SD card to put the data on. It needs to be 32 gigabytes or more in capacity, and class 10 or better is recommended. I had a spare 64GB SanDisk Class 10 that was used for this process.

I enjoyed the company of Firefox for the download as it would resume the download correctly each time it stopped. Once the download was about 1/3 of the way through the connection maintained itself until completion.

Next is the first of the two tricky parts.
Format the SD card as an NTFS volume, not FAT, FAT32, or ExFat. I tried Fat32 first but things didn’t work. Then again, that might be because I didn’t do the second trick. But we’ll talk about that later.

Extract the single downloaded file to the SD card. This can take some time.
Once the extraction completes you will see one file and two folders on the SD Card.

    metainfo2.txt
    Mib1
    Mib2

Place the SD Card into the Columbus unit inside the glovebox and start up the Infotainment unit. You can do this before a drive (remembering that the navigation system is unavailable during the update) or just sitting there draining your battery.

Press the Nav button on the side of the screen, then the Settings button located on-screen in the lower right corner.

Here’s where trick number two comes in.
Silly me then tapped the Version information button, then the Update (SD/USB) button at the bottom of the Version information screen.
This constantly resulted in a message that there were no updates found.
It turns out that this isn’t the button we are looking for (lousy Jedi mind tricks).
On the Navigation settings screen, tap the Manage memory button.

On the Manage memory screen tap Update “My POIs” (SD/USB).

You will be taken to an Update my POIs screen, with an Update button at the bottom.
    Tap the Update button.

A screen should soon appear titled Software update, and show a message about Available data: NavDB Version 2017.

Tap the Next button at the bottom of the screen.
A Software update in progress… screen will appear with a fuel gauge and % complete number.

The bar took close to 40 minutes to reach 100%. From 94% onwards it seemed to take longer for each increment.
At the end of the process a message appears to indicate that the Software update is complete. Tap OK.

You should now see the new version information reported.

I am getting an error on 95%. Several attempts using two different SD cards (NTFS formatted). The Version Information screen is now showing the new version number, however not confident given the process didn't complete 100%. Anyone else with issues updating the maps? I was able to start the update from the Version Information screen rather than the NAV screen as suggested above. The update took about 30min to get to the 95%.

I follow the instruction on the skoda website after entering the VIN.
After pressing the download map, it will download exe file.
Run this file and it took me 7hrs to download.
I inserted my sdcard with ntfs formatted.
After finished downlod and then extract the file then browse to sdcard and it requested to format as fat32 in order to continue.
After that then extract the file to sdcard around 50mins (from my old usb 2 computer).
note: I think if you extract the zip file using the zip or 7z much faster around 15mins and I compare the files and looks the same.

BUT I use the sdcard from the extracted exe file from skoda and took me around 50mins to update the map in the car - 100% though.
      I turn off start stop.

note: I follow skoda instruction to go to setup>system info>update.

There is an instruction link on how to update after you enter the VIN number.

The update is different on Mac. There is no download.exe to run. On my Mac I had to download then extract to SD card manually. There are few potential issues to overcome as I read on other forums. Specifically using third party unzip programs rather than Mac built-in and formatting the SD card to NTFS (again using third party program). I have tried several times, still I was unable to install. At the end used my old windows laptop and used the download.exe and extract to 32GB SD class 10. Map installed fine. So, it seems Skoda need to iron out the process for Mac operating system. Also, its crazy having to download the whole world, Skoda should create AUS & NZ map. Surely would be a lot smaller and faster installation process. My Yeti Columbus NAV uses DVD for update which is AUS specific and is a lot easier process.

FAT32 works fine, but not the FAT32 of Windows OS (it is slightly different and doesn't work on all devices). The best way to format the SD Card is to use a proper formatting tool, like this one:

          https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Just download the tool (Windows or Mac), format the SD card, then unzip the contents of the update there, and run the update in your car.
Once you insert the SD card, the infotainment system should detect the update on the SD card and will display a message about.

I have updated my maps successfully that way.

Just a heads up that there doesn't appear to be any speed issues at the Skoda end at the moment. The update maxed out my connection when I downloaded it today, now onto the fun part of the actual update.

Does anyone know if the update mentioned above is the ROW (Australia) update Skoda are saying will be released in mid-Feb?

The updates are every 6 months, November and May.
The one above is the November 2016 release.

Spoke with Skoda last week - apparently in addition to the MDM release (Nov 2016) there will be an ROW release mid-Feb, so watch the update portal.

Was about to update my Octy as I missed the Nov release, but with the time taken to download, may as well wait now.

A bit off topic but never the less a GPS story. I had to travel interstate over the last week and for the first time with GPS so I did not take any maps with me after all GPS is all we need, wrong assumption on my part and I will never travel to a strange (to me) part of the country again without paper maps. The GPS in two instances started me off correctly but them decided it would take me to my destination the way it wanted to go not the way I wanted to go and both times it added about 100kms to the trip. The problem is without maps you have no context of where things have gone wrong so you are forced to blindly follow the GPS. I thought I would fix things by putting in a town that was on my way but north of where I was and the GPS still insisted on going SE to a highway entrance point where there were many secondary roads available that would have made for a faster trip. GPS is good if you have reference points and can place yourself but if you are in a strange area and have no knowledge of place names etc it is a real problem.

You lost me at "SD card inside glovebox". The only place I have found to insert an SD card is in the front of the unit.

There are two SD card slots on the unit that is in the glovebox of all late model cars.

There should be settings for fastest or shortest and the ability to not use certain types of roads.
