  • Wanting tyre recommendations

    Hello All
My 2010 Superb Elegance 2.0 TDI 125 wagon has covered 42 odd thousand kays and the original (??? bought as demo) Dunlop SP Sport Fast Response tyres made in Germany are soooooooooooooo noisy I must change. They still have mm's of wear according to the wear indicators BUT the noise is deafening and embarrassing. Sounds like an old 4wd coming down the road. My son said 'have you done a wheel bearing!'
Anyway my prerequisite list has (obviously) good grip wet and dry but please a QUIET and comfortable ride.
I was thinking Michelin or Pirelli?
    All suggestions gratefully received.

    Michelin PS3. I find Pirelli a bit hit'n'miss.

Go to Ralf at TruTrac & get a decent wheel alignment as well.

If you are really concerned about noise the Toyo Teo or the Yokohama dB Decibel will be even more suitable. PS3 is still very civilised though

The Nitto Invo tyre is also reported to be very comfortable
It's not in the same performance bracket as the PS3 however

my research suggests the PS3 as being overkill for our cars???
              perhaps lesser Michys ???

Safe and good quality tyres are never an overkill although its advantages over cheap chinese made rubber are only evident in emergency situations...

PS3 aren't overkill. You'll get good mileage out of them. Michelin PSS are overkill.

If you wanted a more touring oriented tyre then you could go to the Michelin Primacy. I've just had a set of Primacy HP on my car for 75,000km. While they were adequate (I drive very conservitavely) the Bridgestone RE050A that have replaced them are noticeably better in steering response.

You are probably wondering why I fitted RE050A when I recommend Bridgestone - 4 filthy but unmarked alloys & 4 near new tyres for $400 off Gumtree is why.

The PS3 is the cheapest in the range anyway - 225/45r17 91W = $175 at Tempe Tyres (yes, in Sydney but there must be a similar outfit in MEL)

If you want something a bit cheaper then the ContiMaxContact is $139.

You might also save $5/tyre if you get 235/45r17. I've run that size on my Octavia & the speedo is a lot more accurate (but still under) due to the bigger diameter. Not sure if the Superb suffers from the same massively inaccurate speedo as the Octavia Elegance though (check with a GPS).

I would agree with Brad - PS3 are not over kill - they provide great safety and performance/feel and mileage
I've just checked the rear tread depth on mine, down 0.3mm over 26k, they are going to last for a very long time!

0.3mm or 3mm? New is about 8mm. If 0.3mm indeed... they will last over 200,000km for 6mm usage

                        Whoops - that a point
I was thinking new tread was 6mm as per my semi slicks
but new road tyre tread is indeed 8mm - so I've used 2.3mm
Looking like they are good for ~68,000km
These PS3's on the rear have done two track days however - going well really

I fitted a set of Michelein PS3 in October 2013 and have done 17,000 km since then. I can only heap praise on them for noise (low), low speed handling is increased as is high speed handling, low wear rate (haven't measured, but they still look real good). My favourite "like" is the sure footed braking that I now feel. These tyres are not overkill for my GTD and if you get a good price I think you should jump on them.

One point to consider is that most of us live with our tyres for about 2-3 years on a daily basis.

I honestly can't remember the exact price I paid for something 2 years ago but when I buy something that is "a bargain but not quite as good as it should be" every usage is a reminder that I was a tight-arse & skimped where i shouldn't have.

Even if you spend $200/tyre & they last 40,000km (x-rotated every 7500-10,000km) - that's 2c per km per set. Cheap motoring I reckon.

I have the conti sportpack 2 and if there still around will fit them again.
I recall one of my first posts after purchasing the Jetta in 2007 was the noise of them however
after still with original and now with 105,000 k's and still tread to wear will stick with the same brand.
Have also kept them at 40psi
