  • Another leak this morning

Good morning guys, I found another leak this morning. It reddish in colour. Is this the coolant?

Would it be safe to drive 15 minutes to the dealership?

    Many thanks.

Looks like coolant and I am sure it is safe, but I wouldn't drive it. Ring the service department, tell them the problem, show them the picture then leave the decision of what to do with them.

Yeah dont add plain water to it. Works for regular cars but not for VWs. It needs specific coolant only

A better pic would be of the Coolant bottle/engine bay specially near radiator hose

I have dropped it at the dealership, they will check it and let me know.

I have checked the bottle, nothing suspicious around that area. I couldn't locate where the leakage is coming from.

The car gave me a coolant alert on the way, though the temperature didn't rise over 90. I stopped at service station and topped it up.

Luckily it is school holidays and there was no traffic, the whole trip took 7 minutes.

The leak is coming from the water pump and it has to be replaced. Luckily, there is one in the country.

Surprising.....but these things can happen.....how many K's have you done?
Good news for you is that it should be a pretty routine job and you didn't cook the engine.

Yeah I hope so... I'm just frustrated with amount of issues I'm having with this specific car...
                I have done 19000 KM.

What did you top it up with VW should only be topped up with the specific coolant used Either G12 Pink or G13 and NOT MIXED

Yes I made a stupid mistake by adding a Caltex one that is green in colour. I don't think it is G13.
I told them about that, they will flush it and add new coolant.

I remmber I was looking for G13 coolant, couldn't find any at SCA, then I forgot about it.
Does mixing the green and red cause major issues?

I just drove for 3 minutes with that.

You are fine as it will be flushed. but they should not be mixed. The green will stuff everything.

Nulon make a red G12+ coolant you can get at SCA, both concentrate and pre mix in 6 litre.

If you do need an emergency top up (less than 1 litre) and don't have the correct G12+ coolant, I would recommend just using some demineralised water. This would do the least amount of damage. Wrong mix rate would only reduce the boiling point a bit, you can correct it later with some more concentrate. But if you need to top it up there must be something wrong and chances are the whole system will be drained and refilled once the cause is fixed.

Many thanks for the info, I will make sure not to do this again... I actually thought it is better to top it up with green coolant rather than water.

Definitely don’t mix different coolants. Rapairs to the cylinder head or any other cooling system part are very costly. Distilled or demineralised water are the best options if no original coolant is available.

Thanks, I will make sure to buy the recommended coolant when I get my car back.
They will have to flush the coolant when they replace the pump, correct?
I have also specifically asked them to do that.
