Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    I've seen several comments in various forums and FB pages, that dealers HATE warranty work?

    Why?

    I assume they are still getting paid for it from the manufacturer, the same way a customer would be paying them if it wasn't a warranty claim?

    So why all the hate on dealers doing warranty work?

    Or do they not actually get paid the same, or at all?




    Reason I'm asking - my RS goes in for it's first ever 15k service tomorrow, and I've already advised them during booking that there's several warranty things that need inspecting or replacing..... and I'm hoping this dealership/service agent is a lot more accommodating and has better c/service than the previous one did who dealt with my car when it had it's original warranty issue.




    I know there's some mechanics/dealers on here who can give personal insight to this question?

    Warranty repairs are paid at a lower rate, with set labour times, as well as a lot of the margin stripped out of the parts (virtually charged out at cost price in most cases).

    All dealerships are on different warranty labour rates, which are dependant on various factors like technician qualifications (manufacturer-based training), customer satisfaction scores, and several other conditions.

    It's not a simple case of a dealer refusing to do warranty repairs because they don't want to. It hurts their bottom line, sure. But if the car is under warranty, and it is deemed to have a warrantable fault, then they're pretty much obligated to fix it. That's what they signed up for, when they took the franchise on.

        steering wheel roller button on right wont operate (common fault)

        liquid marks on rear boot struts, not sure if leaking, or just condensation. (if leaking = common fault)

        electric window switches don't always "auto" up or down and need several presses to activate the auto function... have reprogrammed manytimes, but doesn't fix issue (common fault)

        That's all really that's "wrong" with the car.....

          The oil on the struts I've seen since new. In Feb the boot actually sagged after opening on a steep hill. They also started making a whirring sound but then not opening and beeping before my first service. They reset it and now that doesn't happen, but they were supposed to get back to me about the oil on the struts. I'd say they have lost tension/pressure and the whirring is resistance when it goes to open....ie it thinks something is blocking the boot and stops.

          Auto up/down is always a little tricky as it can depend how far you move the switch.

            Yeh - my window switches i always push/pull ALL the way till it clicks, but it usually doesn't play ball when I do both front windows at the same time...... but occasionally when just using a single switch.

            Sometimes I think I'm doing it too quickly before releasing, but then I compare with a different car, and there's definitely an issue. Shouldn't have to hold the button for a full second-or-so to engage the auto function. Designed to be a quick hand-off-wheel-press-switch-hand-back-on-wheel thing.
