  • APR Stage 1 for RS162

I'm probably not the first to ask and I'm not sure if this is the place but can anybody give me any feedback on the APR or similar stage 1 tunes for the RS? We just bought one, pick it up next week maybe, and apart from wheels I wouldn't mind personalising the performance. I've seen quotes of 87hp increase on 98ron, that puts it around 225-228kw, does this sound right?

I am not sure what the APR support is like now that Harding are no longer their distributor in Australia. Harding use oem+ now. Its a viable alternative, a friend has it on his s3 and he is really happy.

Perhaps have a talk to them about your options?

I borrowed a vRS from Lennock Skoda about a year ago that had a stage 1 done by the dealer. Had about 200kw. Definitely felt a bit quicker. The dealer said it was covered by a 12 month warranty. Trying the manual was nice, too. I have the dsg.

Was booked in for a stage one APR but have pulled the pin until I figure out the insurance implications.....
What do most do with insurance? Declare the mod? Go to a special insurer like just car?

I'm also looking at a racechip ultimate. I believe it's a piggyback that can be removed. I thought the whole key to the ECU flash was it was undetectable which makes the whole insurance question moot

Picture disconnecting the box if you have rear ended someone in traffic? A lot more visible than a flash tune.

ECU flashing increments the flash counter - the dealers will know it's been altered
Besides, to get the ECU flashed or reverted you have to book it into the workshop a few days in advance so they can order the flash tool
If you have an accident and the car gets towed away you won't have the chance to remove the flash

I'm insured with AIMEE, declared the ECU flash, no problems
(Probably will be a problem for males in their 20's)

I doubt stage1 will be 200kw or above
My Octavia is the older RS149, stage one was around 178kw and not all that impressive to drive
Stage2 with a bigger down pipe and high flow CAT was far more impressive, huge torque and power band
(I don't know much about the RS162 - maybe the stock exhaust is upgraded)

What happens if your in a nasty accident and your car gets towed away and then examined due to the seriousness of the accident - then your insurance wont come to the party because you have changed the performance of the vehicle without letting them know...
I know its a small chance this may occur but if it did you could be in a world of hurt - id rather insure my modified car and have peace of mind.

Safer to declare it than not. Have you also considered the potential warranty implications?

If you are going to go down the piggyback route, i wouldn't touch anything other than the Berger Motorsports JB1 which has plenty of local feedback (from users fitting to MK7 GTI / R etc) and has proven gains both on the dyno and racetrack.

Funnily enough, there is a group buy on currently for the Berger Motorsports JB1 tuning box. Its well priced already, but even cheaper with the group buy: http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...le-114939.html

Don't forget this is the Octy vRS 3rd generation with the new/revised engine with a substantially bigger turbo than the gen 2 Octy vRS. The Mk7 GTI is getting over 200kw from a tune, so it will be the same for the Octy vRS.

                          Hi Bill
I am also in Brisbane I've had my Unitronic tune for over 3 month now and loving it, its a lot smoother, not as violent as the APR, and the the guy who does it has awesome aftersale service, he said if it was going back for service he would be able to flash it back to normal.

I have the race chip ultimate and its 213kw. They get more in Europe But it's a little less power in Aus due to fuel quality. The Apr Snr oem+ are about 10kw more but also twice the price and harder to remove plus there's a cost to remove as well
Still makes quit a difference to stock. Plus the phone app lets you switch mods and also put a timer so you run in stock mode till it warms up and switches over once the timers up that you set. Wether you go for flash or piggy back you run the risk of insurance and warranty issues. Warranty is easier with the race chip as I can pull it off before it goes to a dealer even though my dealer fitted it and are happy but if I relocate and have to go to another dealer I'm sorted.

Ok made enquirery about APR stage 1 $1600 here in Perth. A little steep so the alternatives Race chips Ultimate with phone app for $825 or Bluefin chip similar price. Anybody comment on bluefin.
