Had you have bought from the Au distributor, I'd dare say you may have the same issue as well - sounds like a car ECU issue and not the Bluefin. I am sure Demon Tweeks will be able to sort it out for you. Let us know how you go ...

I contacted Peter James, and was advised (I'm paraphrasing here) that you get what you pay for, and the handset was more than likely second hand and will require a reset, or to be registered to my car. Apparently he has had a number of similar queries from customers of demon tweeks...
I'll take it with a grain of salt at this point: I have emailed demon tweeks and am waiting for a reply.

Good value bluefin tune
He's the contact point that Superchips UK gave me when I made an enquiry...
Not that I really feel the need to justify myself to an unrelated party with nothing constructive to contribute, I'll humour you: I simply enquired with Superchips to clarify what the error code meant, and was directed to contact the Australian distributor.
If you read my post, you will see I also contacted the UK seller, but I'm still trying to ascertain where the issue lies: in the handset, or my car's ecu.
Thanks for your input though.

Have you by chance had an APR trial at all. This is a common cause of Handhelds not being able to talk to the car, as the trial tune reverts back to an "APR" stock tune, and locks you into APR...2014 Skoda Yeti TDI Outdoor 4x4 | Audi Q3 CFGC repower | Darkside tune and Race Cams | Darkside dump pDPF | Wagner Comp IC | Snow Water Meth | Bilstein B6 H&R springs | Rays Homura 2x7 18 x 8" 255 Potenza Sports | Golf R subframe | Superpro sways and bushings | 034 engine mounts | MK6 GTI brakes |

It would be extremely hard for MickeyB to find out about that, if he had bought the car second hand.RS

I would assume that if that's the case, it's been flashed back to the "factory settings" through APR, as the car feels like a stock one. If that were the case, then it would explain the code I'm getting.
I have a mate who runs a VW dealership, so if I need the ecu reset, it's no big issue, just inconvenient...

Ah... I have a surprising twist to the story...
I managed to hunt down the details for the previous owners, and contacted the APR workshop.
It turns out that the car HAS had the APR stage 1 fitted in the past. Given I have no basis for comparison, it may well be that it's still running the tune. If not, it will cost me $300 to have it flashed again.
The guys were awesome: I'm booked in next week to see whether the tune is still installed, but either way, it looks like I'll be going with APR.
Anyone want a bluefin unit for what I paid for it?

Update - received Bluefin unit and installed over the weekend (took about 30 mins - very straightforward)
My 2011 GTI is much better now, seems to be stronger towards the top than before and is definitely more urgent in all area's - cant be sure of how much but will give it some more driving as i've only had 2 short runs - really looking forward to see if it affect or improves my fuel consumption - i really struggle to get 500 k's out of a tank so lets see...
Good deal though!
GaryCurrent ride - MKVI GTI, Candy White, 4 door, Detroits, DSG, BT
Previous VW - MK 1 Golf Clipper Convertible - 1993 - gone and now called Linda
Previous VW - MK 1 Golf GTI 1983, Lhasa Green, Perrielli P's, euro front look, gone but not forgotten

Good value bluefin tune
^ your GTI should get slightly better economy once tuned.
My Mk6 GTI is stage 2 and i normally get 550ish km's out of a tank, and thats mostly short trips (under 15-20mins).

I have a Stage 1 bluefin on my 2012 TSI Occy vRS and I generally get around 8-9.5l/100km city driving (fairly spirited most mornings) and 6-7l/100km highway. My fuel economy def improved with the Stage 1. I do find different fuel types affect my fuel economy. Generally use Caltex 98 RON. Have just filled up with BP 98 RON and noticed better pulling power but also worse ecomony (perhaps this is a function of the better pulling power and my right foot!!!).
