Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Removing card from swing radio

    Afternoon Gurus,

My wonderful toddler has managed to insert a membership card into the CD slot on the Swing radio in our Octavia and I am wondering how to get the bloody thing out. I'm not really concerned about not being able to use the CD player but it keeps thinking there is a CD in there switching to CD mode and then throwing an error.

I guess I am going to have to remove the whole radio but I am open to other, less painful suggestions. Also, does any one have a repair manual for the radio? Also, need some instructions on how to remove.

Thanks and Happy New Year to you all!

Another one that often works for stuck CDs so may work for you is to partly insert an old CD in the slot and use the friction to 'grab' the card and pull it out. You need to experiment with the angle to get it to grip.

If you pull it out and open it up (100% way to get the card out) just remember that you will void the warranty for that unit.

Personally I wouldn't be sticking anything in there that could potentially get stuck in there adding to your problem.

It might be possible to use a bent bit of wire like a coat hanger and hook in behind the card but could also do damage to other components in the stereo. Other option is removing it and getting it pulled apart.

Paper clip? What about that emergency eject button (if there is one)? Usually requires something like a paper clip to press it?
Or surgical tweezers if the card is close to the front?

The emergency eject is to release the transport lock so you can get the disc out The card that was put in wouldnt have lowered the platter.
It will just be sitting in there somewhere and something sticky should get it out

                      Got it!

                      Thanks for the tips!

So I was fishing around with double sided tape on a ruler and hitting the eject button and the card come out.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be reading CDs properly at the moment. Will try again in a week or so. Currently showing "CD: Error"

Go to Jaycar or a Hi fi shop and buy a laser cleaning disc.

You shouldnt have needed to touch the eject button, all that does is pop the lock to let the transport come up off the spindle.
The card probably wouldnt have pushed it down into the working position.
You may have touched the laser with the sticky and put some crap on it.

The cleaning disc which has a small brush on it may be enough to clean it.

The only other way is to disassemble it and clean the laser with Isopropyl alcohol..

Have had a lot of experience with Playstation laser assemblies that used to die with monotonous regularity

Other than what Hillbilly said above, I'd also try a "reset" of the head unit to see if that clears the CD: Error.
