Thanks everyone for your replies! We were also considering a Jetta but its not going to be long before thats too small. Good to know about country of manufacture as well...

Thoughts on a tiguan? (if i ask octavia owners i might get an objective answer!)

Tiguan is small compared to an Octavia. The boot is tiny, and nowhere near as much room. But they drive well for an suv

Good cars but almost everyone that owns one seems to complain about boot size. Yeti is even smaller I believe.

How about a roomster if space is a priority.

I'm looking for a second car now, currently have 1z rs octavia wagon.

Yes, the boot is smaller in Tiguan but it is not ridiculously tiny like people seem to imply. It is 395lt, similar size to a medium hatchback, looks bigger than my wife's Astina for example. If you want a boot like the octy you have to get something like a mondeo, or suv like outlander or crv. Those don't have the combined performance and fuel economy of the Tiguan. Also none have close to the 2T towing capacity.

Tiguan rear passenger room is better than the octavia too. I test drove one yesterday and sat in the back after adjusting the drivers seat to fit me (178cm tall, usually have seat back a bit more so I can stretch my legs on long drives). The Tiguan easily has more room than when I sit in the back of the octavia. Maybe it is because of the higher Seating position in the Tiguan that I didn't need to push the drivers seat back as much, not sure.

Also the back seats slide forward to increase boot space if needed and seat backs have different recline positions too.

By my comparison - if you want to fit large bulky items in the Tiguan on a regular basis then probably not the best pick, octavia will trump for boot space every time. If you are talking about passenger room only then the Tiguan is better.

Check Tigger73s comments in the 103 v 132 thread, he is a Tiguan owner looking at an Octavia

I'm 6ft and test drove a tiguan and when I moved the seat to my position (I have very long legs/short body) my knees were hard up against the seat. Not so in the Octavia 3. Even the 2 I could still fit behind, just more cramped. Odd you found out larger? (It's a good test for me because I need the seat in a similar position to a mate who is 6'4). I do it in every single car I test.
My statesman I could get the seat so far back I could only just touch the pedals!

                Good summation.
The mk3 occy addressed the rear legroom issue though

I forgot you can move the back seat. Probably explains the differences in rear seat room. I never adjusted it in my 'test'.

Is the 395l with the rear seats fully back?

I think you're kidding yourself if you think the boot space in the Tiggy and Occy are comparable. Don't just look at the litreage. It's also a dimensional thing. The Tiggy boot is very shallow (from back of seats to tailgate) but higher (up to the back of the seats, which is where they measure the volume too), hence it can get the 395 litres. The occy boot is incredibly deep but lower (up the back of the seats), hence on paper it only gets 595 litres (or thereabouts). But in the real world, you can't fit jack **** in the Tiggy boot compared to the Occy boot.

They are chalk and cheese IMO.

And yes the seats do adjust in the Tiggy to give you some slight extra boot space, but again, it's diddly squat difference IMO. The Tiggy boot is just plain unuseable IMO.

                        Great info guys!

We test drove a Tiguan last week and it was very nice... Going to look at an Octavia and a 159SW (400NM of torque) this weekend

I'm not sure unusable is right but as I've owned a few SUVs, I always have a laugh when people tell me they bought their Outlander/ Captiva / whatever for the luggage capacity. A Holden Zafira fits more in the back than most SUVs.

I totally agree with you about the relative lack of boot-space in most SUVs, possible exceptions being the old X-trail and the new Honda CRV.
The old Camira was surprisingly good from the boot capacity aspect, but the Europeans have always done 'small' wagons better.
Some Peugeots were brilliant and British Leyland did a Maestro estate (wagon). Brother in law, picked up my family of 4 in one from Heathrow (20 years ago?). Back seat width and leg-room was amazing and luggage area was equally impressive and there were still two ****y seats folded for when you wanted a 7 seater.
Modern safety standards probably make it more difficult to design a space efficient car, which is why the Octavia stands out from the crowd for me in this market segment.

I think unusable is a bit harsh. Of course the octavia boot is much bigger, I fit large bulky boxes in it all the time that would never go in the Tiguan. For some this might not be high on the requirements list.

You do get a one advantage that is the higher loading floor in the Tig. For me I am taking boxes in and out of the boot multiple times a day, reaching for things stored at the back of the octy boot does strain the back after time. It really just depends how you intend to use it.
