Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Took the 17" rims off & fitted the 18". Came back to OEM tyre diameter after 105,000km on bigger boots. Not a fan of the OEM size to be honest. The wheels and tyres look a bit lost even with a 30mm F / 10mm R drop.

    Mandatory crappy phone pics.

    • Seem to recall someone else with user name 'brad' who was going to bring his Octavia back to standard spec in order that his L / P plate daughter didn't attract attention from the 'shire constabulary😉

        Indeed, that was the plan...

If only said daughter (who turned 18 a few months back) would even get her L plates! She's currently in full-on HSC mode (last exam in early Nov) with occasional OPD training for her part-time job so driving lessons are the last thing on her mind.

What is it with kids these days that they aren't interested in having a licence / ability to drive? None of her friends drive either.

Same same. My 22 year old son had to be coaxed into driving. Had his learners but couldn't be bothered. Only way we got him over the line was to buy him a car and make him drive it. Mind you I am using it as MY project !
Still catches the bus to uni ! Lots of similar stories in his group.

          • I am in the UK( but not under the best of circumstances) and having to use Public Transport to get into London.
Quite honestly it is fantastic with buses and trains running every few minutes and on time. I can see why it is so popular here although the fact it is almost impossible/expensive to drive into London is also a factor.
Adelaide public transport it si not so good and would prefer to ride a bike, walk, or even drive and park a car first.

Another factor for our youth may be that if you are operating a car then you cannot operate your mobile phone, the latter seems to take priority over everything.

Not driving to Uni makes a lot of sense as there is never any parking.

Gerrycan - I agree, the public transport in London is fantastic.

I'll admit a certain level of selfishness in wanting her to drive. She doesn't drink alcohol (various reasons which is fine by me), so it would be good if she could drive home and give me the option of having an extra drink... or 3.

              • Well not today but over the weekend...

Fitted new plugs, timing belt inc new tensioner and idlers, new water pump, new PCV, flushed coolant, new air filter, sway bar bushes, ball joints, lower control arm console bushes, lower control arm inner bushes (all superpro) traced a rattle in the dash to a stray $2.50 in coins floating around, washed and waxed, treated the leather, installed FL climate control and Swing radio I had laying around from a previous project... then I had a rest!

Next weekend is new strut mounts and bearings as well as Bilstein B4's all round (I'm too old for B6's or B8's) I also have a Mk5 GTI MFSW to go on, just changing the SMD leds to green ones at the moment... also fitting the required highline controller to make it work. Following that I'll be splashing out on a later CANBUS and Columbus headunit and OEM bluetooth.

Last but not least I'll also be fitting a new HPFP cam follower and changing the oil and filter but that will probably be the weekend after.

                  • Put a new indicator switch ($31.39 eBay from China) in to fix the dead cruise control. Lucky I'd previously replaced the steering column and knew the tricks to getting the bits behind the steering wheel off. I almost always left the little cruise control switch on top switched on - maybe that was not a good idea, but I would have thought moving it off and on would wear it out quicker.

Finally got around to installing my front Koni FSD struts and the front H&R anti roll bar to go with the rear ones - and a set of alloy SuperPro lower control arms with bushes, and a Superpro torque arm insert (stiffens up the lower rear engine mount). Still have the standard springs - I'm not interested in lowering it.

Blimey what a difference! Bit hard to tell what did it, but the alloy control arms are 2.3 kg verses 3.95 kg for the steel ones, so less unsprung weight combined with the excellent FSD struts/shocks. The ride is much more comfy. Worth the $930 for the FSD's. Now it rides/handles as good as it goes.

                    • Cleaned the car, inside and out (over 2 days), but didn't do the wheels as I didn't have time. Looks good [emoji7] .

Finally installed the rearguard! Was looking at the instructions and it states the best temp range to install it is 18-30 degrees. If I was going to wait for the weather to warm up, I'd be waiting months, lol!

So with a clean car, hair dryer, masking tape and numb fingers, I attached the guard. Looks fantastic (IMO).

Ps. That's the Aldi bootliner that is dirty - original is nice and clean [emoji41] .

I wouldn't mind but my fuel usage takes a hit every winter.

                            • They are built for this weather. The turbo and engine absolutely loves the cold air flow. I've also noticed that the engine has stepped up a notch in performance in the last few days, and the only anomaly I can think of is the Melbourne weather.

I'm guilty of milking every bit of this sudden mechanical enthusiasm! It means more stops at the pump though.
