Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What will you buy when your Octavia doesn't arrive?

With unending delays on the Octavia it's got me wondering what else I could have bought. What did you cross shop before placing your order? Where would you go if the Octavia wasn't your preferred option? I looked at only turbo models this time so what else could I have bought and why could you choose that over what you did? WRX? GTI? XT Forester? A250? These I looked at and could be driving now if I didn't want a manual turbo wagon and choose the RS.

Manual turbo wagon? I think the only ones that can do that are a i30 diesel, and BMW and Audi do manual turbo wagons, with similar wait times. Wait, a Renault gt220 is smaller and not as nice, but slightly cheaper and available as manual.

All other wagons were auto only (Mazda 6, Mondeo, i40, forester).

I'm sticking it out and waiting, purely because there really are no other options at that price, that size, with those specs.

A commodore ssv v8 wagon (auto only) is another possible option.

There isn't much to compare if you're after a mid-sized 4-cylinder wagon with a bit of performance under $50K. I'd be tempted to look at the Megane GT220 wagon if the Octavia RS wasn't an option. I'm not into SUVs, so that would rule out the Forester for me.

What did you rule out to get to the Octavia as "the one"? What was the runner up choice?

Closest would be a megane gt220. It's smaller, but in spirit it is the closest thing.

But for me, as I bought a family car, i30 was the other close one (less fun, but reliable and cheap). Gutless though.

Mazda 6 was nice if you can handle auto.... Drives well. Goes about the same as a 1.4t Skoda.

I got a manual gti when my order went from sep delivery to jan/feb. The extra size was more of a convinience rather than a need. Plus i got the gti within a week of canceling the rs...

I would have gone with an Audi A4 sedan 2.0L TSI Quattro Manual. Audi had their mid-year sale at the same time I placed the order on the Octavia RS wagon. I was quoted 48,000 for a 2013 build Audi which just ran 1800 Kms. I referred a mate and he was wise enough to take up the deal, he hasn't stopped smiling since. Me on the other hand, ah well...

I am happy to compromise on my requirements to what is currently (imminently) available. I am not that fussy about colour (except black, I won't have a black car) for instance.
Having said that the exact car I (sorry WE) wanted was available within 3 weeks, including my (sorry OUR) colour preference.

I would have considered a Golf Wagon, if they came in manual, but really there was nothing else that came close for the price of the base version Octavia.
If the Octavia 3 was not available then I would have stuck with my 6 year old Octavia 2.
At my age, who has the time left or patience to order one.

I looked at the A250, but dismissed it as soon as i found out i couldn't test drive one without being ready to buy on the same day as they were apparently selling fast. Had a quick look at the mazda 6 but it was pricey and i was only interested in the diesel. Scoped out the GTI and I would've probably got it had i not considered the RS. But unlike the vast majority, i have my car already.

I was looking at an Amarok (in Dec 2011, though!), then drove past the Skoda dealership and thought "oh why not" ... Looked at a Scout, saw my car on the lot and fell in love. :p

If I had to order one, instead of just pick it up, I'd still do it. 200,000km later and still v.happy!

If I was looking for another car today then I'd probably try & find a 2nd hand 1.8tsi manual Yeti, a Superb of some description (and live wit the DSG) or if I had to buy new then an Amorok tsi manual or a Roomster 77tsi manual

I'd also have a quick look at a Mini Clubman Cooper & the GT220

Cross shopped the Subaru Liberty and Mazda 6 wagons but value for money and that fun factor sold me on the Octavia RS. Because I'm impatient I recon next time I'll check out second hand Skodas to save on wait time and depreciation.

As others have mentioned I also like the look of the Megane GT220 although I haven't taken one for a spin.

I considered a used Subaru Liberty and / or a used vRS. (One for play, one for daily !)
Maybe if I get pissed off waiting I'll reconsider that. Nothing on the "new car" front excites except above the 80k bracket. (Volvo polestar, Audi S4 ...)
