Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Personally I'd be against retrofits on the Octy 3, dealer ones are almost always half arsed and not quite the genuine article. Lot of reports from the UK of dealers 'fitting' the black pack, but they actually just end up painting the wing mirrors and chrome grille black which then flakes and chips off a few months later (tall order asking paint to stick to chrome).

Hit me with my options. Must have the following:
      Iso fix, auto, wagon.

Dont care what it is, just not a ford, holden or a suv.

golf wagon - betcha there's stock of them.

I'd just go with a Superb - either the Twindoor or the wagon. Have a bit of an open mind as (for me) the hatch fulfills 90% of my load carrying needs.

Yeah golf wagon is an option, but smaller inside and more expensive. Does a Mazda 6 have isofix?

          Edit: second hand Volvo v60

Are you sure the current Golf wagon is smaller than the Octavia? I did not see much difference when I was looking at them back in April.
There was a big difference between the Octavia Mk2 and previous Golf wagon for boot volume.

Main reason I was sold on the Octavia a) manual available b) wagon rear aperture was easier for loading bikes c) more powerful engine d)drive-away pricing.

The boot space you are correct, they are almost identical, but rear seat legroom the Octavia is bigger. The cabin the Octavia is a size up from the golf. Octavia has a 610l boot versus 605 for the golf, so nothing in it. But legroom it's noticeable. I'm 6' tall, but am built like a gorilla (stumpy body, long arms and legs) I need the seat back to feel comfortable. My test is set the drivers seat to my position then get in the back behind the driver to see how much room there is. In the Octavia, my knees have a gap to the front seat, in the golf, my knees are against the seat.

But Octavia can be manual, so it was a winner on that front for me

You are right the Golf wheelbase is 2620mm and the Octavia 3 is 2680mm. I had always assumed they were the same
I did not look at the Golf really seriously for the previously listed reasons.

60mm doesn't sound like much, but it's definitely noticeable in the back seat. I reckon the whole 60mm is rear seat legroom.

I had a mk2 rs and the mk3 feels another size up inside. Clever packaging more than size changes though

I know you said no Fords but the Mondeo might be worth a look. It's Euro...

And you are right again, the Octavia 2 has 2578mm wheelbase, so an increase between Oct 2 and 3 of a significant 102mm

I personally wouldn't buy the Mondeo, it's a 8yo model that was replaced o/s a year ago. It has been waiting for replacement for a while. It does drive well though, but power shift seems to have more issues than vw dsg's!

I second the Mazda 6 its a nice car, i would have considered it but they are only auto. Or Passat? I know they are a bit more expensive.

I guess you are looking at new only? You might be able to get a good deal on a passat or volvo if they are a year or two old.

Thats scary GTR. I went through the same process (and I'm a long leg'd 6'2) Manual + wagon was the clincher with the 162. On reflection I should have bought a WRX, golf clubs will fit, and that was my main criteria. (And you can now tone down the rear spoiler a bit for oldies like me)

If my knees touch the seat in front on that test, that's a fail as a 'usable' family car. My last car was a statesman. I didn't try that one, as you could have a picnic in the back seat on the floor.

When I had the mk2 rs, I think my legs just touched, but we didn't have kids at that stage, and I figured I'd still the car in a few years before the room was required. Which turned out to be true!

Haha yes. I recall considering the kids. Now the only way they will travel with me is if its a cool car and they drive !
