Oil warning on MFD

I got a warning message while driving today that I haven't seen before and it's a bit of a concern. Instead of the oil level or oil pressure lights on the panel, the message was displayed on the MFD along with a beep. The warning message was along the lines of "Oil pressure low, don't go over 4,000 rpm" and showed a picture of a tacho. This flashed for a while and then went away. I stopped to check the oil level when I could, and it was fine. Any ideas what / why???

Thea car is a 2010 1.8 TSI DSG, for those who don't read sigs.

Take it to your local dealer or if too far get the car towed. It's never a good idea to drive any car with low/no oil pressure, chances are it's just a sensor fault but you can never be too cautious..

a few questions:

Were you on the track?

were you cornering hard to the left when it happened?

is the oil a little low?

what was the oil temp?

a combination of these can show that warning. ive had it myself. keep an eye on the oil levels and keep it topped up always. but id tell the dealer.

No to most of the above, zei20t.

Sedately driving to work, taking off in a straight line (not rapidly) after being stopped at traffic lights on a pretty level road. Oil level is fine (just below full) and oil temp was in the 90s. Really nothing that should stress the system!

I called my mechanic (independent VAG specialist) and he was a bit surprised, said I should bring it in but they can't book it in this week. The closest Skoda dealer is over half an hour's drive from work or home. Is there any point talking to a dealer rather than my regular mechanic since the car is out of warranty?

How long since it was serviced?

I'm thinking maybe a clogged oil filter or the oil has gone "off" (excessive particulate , etc).

I know my wife's car (not a VW group vehicle) is supposed to be on 15k service intervals & it doesn't make it to 10k before it gets a similar warning light.

It was serviced in Feb and has probably done under 8,000 km since then (I'm on the bike today so I can't check from here). Now that I found a picture of the exact wording, some searching suggests a few different things might cause this problem (stuffed sensor or switch or ECU or oil pump among other things). It didn't happen again on the drive home yesterday, and I'm not likely to use the car again before the weekend.

Do you do a lot of stop/start & short trips. That's why hers goes psycho... and I think they use crap oil.

Strangest part of those threads is peoples fear of driving at all when it says don't exceed 4k. If VW thought it bad to drive then it would say so.

The majority of my driving is 25 km commute to work when I don't ride - some stop/start, some freeway. On weekends it's the kids' taxi - mostly short trips.

Yes, the "Ping" noise and flashing warning is a bit of a shock, designed that way I suppose. Not going over 4,000 rpm is not a big deal most of the time, but the thought of major engine problems is a bit of a concern!

Nothing you've said so far makes me think there's an issue with the oil or filter. It must be a sensor or the oil pump & I'm more inclined to think it's a sensor

Thanks Brad. Electronics problems were the most common explanations on those other threads; I would have thought a failing pump would cause the problem consistently rather than occasionally.
