I picked up the car on Friday. Although they showed me where the engine number is generally located there will not be a practical way for the department of transport to see a number on a block. The number I have been given (starting with RR), is apparently a unique identifier (not a part number), and is also shown on the barcode on the cam chain cover. I didn't have time to get to the department of transport so I will find out on Monday if this is enough evidence.
It drives just like before so I'm guessing its the right model type.
In the end the new engine was covered by a combination of Skoda Australia (majority), the extended warranty that came with the car when we bought it, and the dealer.
