Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Battery has inbuilt warranty timer...

So the past few days the battery has been cranking pretty weakly in the cold.

    Today its dead.

Conveniently my warranty and roadside assist expired 10 days ago. I have extended warranty but the battery is a consumable outside of original warranty.

Annoyed. Coincidentally in my previous car, the battery failed a few months before the warranty ran out and Audi replaced it.

Sure you can't wangle something with the Australian Consumer Laws? They generally help with stuff that died just days after the warranty supposedly expires.

Yeah I can't be bothered chasing it up, I know I should. I'm just going to go and get a new one up the road.

You would have to take some of the stuff (active sub) out, to convince them that you didn't put the extra load on the battery, and even after that I wouldn't like your chances.

They would probably cover it, if we hadn't had unusually warm weather it probably would have died within warranty. Batteries are funny things, ours lasted nearly 6 yrs and technically never died, I just replaced it in case.

Yeah I have many more pressing issues to deal with, it's just a bummer.

You have to pick your battles. I bothered last year when our car had done 50k/5yrs and the ($500+) PVC died to take it up with them as that was a short lifespan for a car with an easy life. They agreed. With what the dealer had been increasing service charges years back I have paid for that item many times over anyway.

Got a Varta silver in there and she cranked over first go. Ponied up the extra coin over Yasua hope this one lasts longer than its predecessor...

                    Good choice.
I run a lot of accessories from my starting battery and also 12DC charger, my original battery in the van died within 12 months when new, probably exhausted, as a result of the short trips and not getting enough charge. The battery was replaced under the warranty, but I have realised that charging it at least every 2 weeks could extend the battery's life. It lasted almost 8 years, it was still starting, but I had to leave the van at the crash shop and didn't want the crash repairer to stuff around my battery.

Maybe charging the battery once a months or two when you have hi power amplifier fitted is not a bad idea.

Statutory warranty is based on an item expiring before a reasonable person would expect it to. I reckon 3 years is about right for a battery.

Keep in mind that batteries never used to be a warranty item - they were treated as a consumable like brake pads or tyres. It always amazes me whem people say that VW replaced their battery under warranty
