Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Ambition Wagon: This is what I want, how much should I pay?

    List price is as follows:

    Ambition Wagon Manual $24,340
    Travel Pack $1,300
    Columbus 8" SatNav $2,850
    Colour MaxiDot $150
    After market leather $2,500
    TOTAL $31,140
Could I get this for under $30K?

P.S. I'm happy to wait six months.

I think you should speak to a dealer to get pricing

depending on your negotiation skills, you may well get it for under 30k. but youll need to try first.

Obviously, but I've read of various forums that people are getting pretty good discounts on new Octavias.

I've bought a car through a broker before, who got about 5% off what I had negotiated. Any thoughts on using brokers?

Aim for 5-8% of the listed driveway price and that's what you will pay. Add the aftermarket leather quote onto that price and that should be the total.

At 6% that will be about 29.5k......I got a manual ambition plus wagon with tech pack color maxidot BT and upgraded to 18s for 30.5k. Personally I'd use the satnav on my phone and save 3k.......

Geeze gps units in cars still act like its 15 yrs ago. And the lack of map updates...yikes.

To be fair the 8" Columbus is pretty good.

I would think $29,500 should be quite achievable IMHO. Just over 5%.

And yes, the Columbus isn't cheap but it looks better than add on and is a great unit from what I have seen. I would order it too.

You might want to add comfort Bluetooth if you use a phone in the car (voice control - $50)

Don't get me wrong, the Columbus is great but it's over priced by about 1800. Around $1k I'd consider it. Tbh ambition+ with tech pack has lots more goodies (canton, acc, xenon's, self park, city stop etc) that you will use all the time. The Canton upgrade IMO is totally worth the extra $600 it individually costs). Sounds so much better than the amb+ system (same as amb with travel pack)

Remove the leather price from your figures and go direct to the supplier. if you are using the dealer to get the aftermarket leather for you I'm tipping you're paying about $700 too much in that price. And then aim for 8%, easier attained when you tick a few options boxes.

Agreed Columbus is overpriced but all integrated sat navs are. Is there no way to update maps at all? That would get annoying in a few years!

So the list price is $28,640 without leather, less 8% is 26,350, so $27,000 could be achievable?

                      What does comfort Bluetooth do?

                          maps are upgradeable but
                          a) they don't come out very often
                          b) they aren't cheap if you buy a legit copy.

OTOH, my Garmin gets map updates 2-4 times a year & even tells me if my maps are more than 12 months old. Plus the Garmin comes with lifetime SUNA traffic (handy in Sydney, probably not so much in byron.)

Wife has a Captiva with factory GPS. It's about as good as the GPS I bought in 2002. One of her other cars had factory nav & it was dissapointing too.

Keep in mind you'll probably be able to by the Columbus off ebay in 12 months for $1k

Yeah as mentioned the maps are upgradable, but always well out of date and expensive. I got rid of my standalone Tomtom years back and got the app on my iphone and its maps have been updated free for well over 5yrs. MInd you even "current" maps from Sensis can be incredibly out of date. I find Townsville for some reason is always all wrong in the last 8yrs I have been there. I went to my cousins place the other night that is in a 7yr old house in an estate that had the last places built around then, and it told me there was no road there. The Apple maps weren't much better, they said there was a road but I would have to walk part of it. It's a long established sealed street!

They need to start using universal software the can plug into phones GPS systems or use something more open and easily updated. The current GPS software is decades behind in factory GPS. The exception is Mazda who were smart and use Tomtom, they seem to be on par.

Google Maps on my phone is always accurate and turn-by-turn directions are always flawless. Problem is, its a tiny screen and tinny speaker that's often hard to see and hear in a car.
