  • Octavia shopping trolley brake upgrade to vRS/GTI spec 288mm-->312mm. Bush upgrade

I had no intention of doing this as my stock brakes were perfectly adequate except for excessive dust & some pad knock-back due to excessive lipping on the rotors but...

A guy was clearing out his garage & had GTI calipers, carriers, pads, rotors & braided lines that he wanted to get rid of & I offered him the equivalent of a case of bear for them & he said yep. It was a no brainer when the pick-up was 5 minutes from work.

There isn't a lot of visual difference between the shopping trolley brakes of the Elegance/Ambiente & the GTI/vRS/Jetta 147 version except the disc rotor diameter is increased from 288mm to 312mm. Both are 25mm thick.
Caliper dimensions & functionality are identical but the caliper carrier has slightly longer legs on the GTI to accomodate the bigger rotor.
Brake pad profile is identical & I assume the material is the same as they both dust up like mofos & wear the disc away at the same rate.

Surprisingly, even at 312mm most OEM 16" rims will fit over the calipers.

The rotors were badly lipped & not worth sending to the machinist. I attacked them with the angle grinder. They look like crap now but will probably work - at least until the pads wear away. No photos - too embarrassing.

The calipers & carriers were disgustingly filthy. I don't intend to use the calipers as I couldn't be arsed having to break into the hydraulics & bleed the system afterwards so I'll stick with my stock calipers until the next brake flush is due & then probably just fit the braided lines.

The carriers were also disgusting & I want to keep this car OEM looking. Staying with red was out of the question so a spray job was needed.

    As purchased - filthy.

Clean up in degreaser & detergent & stiff bristle brush.

I haven't fitted them yet as I want to change out the rubber bushes that the caliper slide pins sit in. These have a habit of going hard (or soft) after a few years & causing uneven pad wear, poor brake response, etc. You can buy new rubber bushes for about $30 but I was thinking about getting a TyrolSport Brake Caliper Stiffening Kit

But they are USD95 plus postage which seems a bit OTT for what it is. I've started looking into what is available in stock sintered bronze bushes locally or OS. I think I'll be able to achieve a similar outcome without need for machining for a lot less money.

    I'll update as things develop...

Are your hubs the ones to take the 3 bolt wheel bearings or the 4 bolt ones?

You might remember I did this upgrade on my TDI early last year and I also had to upgrade to 55mm struts from the stock 50mm ones.

Just FYI - incase you go to bolt up the new hub assy and have an 'oh crap!!!' moment

Don't know, but I have the 55mm struts straight out of the box. I haven't checked it with the ruler yet but my calibrated eyeball says it's pretty close & the Briskodians have done it all before.

Thx for the heads-up though as I forgot the 50mm on the lighter vehicles was different.

Not sure what you are offering Mr Hillbilly but thx anyway. I don't envisage having an issue fitting these.

Still have to get the verniers & micrometers out to get a final sizing on the stock bronze bushes but if the sizes don't work then I'll just buy new rubber bushes.
The pins are 12mm so the bush bore can be 12.04mm.
The bore the bush is pressed into appears to be 18.3mm so a standard 18mm OD bush so almost fall in & stay in place with some locktite - maybe.

Used to do this stuff all the time, now I appear to be suffering from CRAFT.

Also, you get more points if you use your grinder to take off the casting marks on your calipers and carriers before your repaint them

Most of the daggy bits are masking tape over the machined surfaces

Nice progress Brad - should give you some headroom with increased braking capacity. Probably a good idea considering your recent 'power up" mods. Got that intercooler fitted yet?

                    Nope

Put my jack back together the other day though.

                    Can't rush these things

Have been kind-of concentrating on my garden / house lately. Weather has been too good for having your head stuck under a bonnet although a fair few jobs have involved re-organising or upgrading things in my garage.

                      Fitted it all up today.
Don't ask how long it took because I started at 9.30 & finished at 13.00 but that included stopping to chat to a few neighbours, cleaning everything I didn't like the look of, wire brushing rust off the hubs & treating them with fish oil, etc, etc.

It was all pretty straight forward & the info is available in any brake pad / disc rotor DIY on most of the forums.
I kept my original calipers so I didn't have to open the hydraulics & bleed the brakes.
Kept the current pads as they still have 8mm on them after 130,000km. As you can see, I don't use my brakes much so this upgrade is probably pretty useless for me. I often do the 45km commute to work & maybe use the brakes 20 times & usually just a dab.

                      Started with this:
                      288mm brakes RHS

                      Finished with this:
                      312mm brakes LHS

Here you can see the difference in rotor diameter & the bigger gap between the hub & the wear surface. ie: the pads & clamping area are the same on both setups. Note ghetto removal of rotor lip

Here you can see the difference in the arm length of the caliper carriers

Finished product all fitted up ready to go

You can actually run 16"rims (possibly even 15") with the 312mm brakes. Test fitted a 16" rim I had.

Took it for a drive. Yes, it feels like brakes that stop the car.

Can't believe how much better the brake pedal feels. More because of the lack of lip (and mine wasn't huge, maybe 1-1.5mm tops) on the rotors than the bigger diameter. I'd got in the habit of pressing the brake pedal, backing off & pressing again for a higher pedal - have had to revise my braking style again.

Rears coming off for "machining" on the weekend.

                          HIJACCCKKKK

Looking to do the same - I picked up some mk5 GTI calipers for super cheap and am looking install them at my next service for those extra killerwasps. Just confirming that the following combo should bolt onto FL Skoda Octavia (non-VRS)?

                          - RDA7229/RDA7229D Rotors (Fronts)
                          - Not sure what RDA Rotors will fit rears, anyone know?
                          - Forge/HEL braided brake lines for fronts (mk5 GTI specific, picked them up brand new for a steal)
                          Front Pads: Remsa 1030.01
                          Rear Pads: Remsa 1031.00

Then I'll grab some compliant fluids to bleed.

I guess the rear question is which rotor should I use for the rears?

What engine have you? more to the point, are you 50mm or 55mm front struts? Photo might explain it better?

I assume it includes carriers - these are the vital component.

I'd avoid RDA. I don't think they are as good as they used to be - maybe I'm wrong. GLSrallysport have some other brands of similar priced rotors that they reckon are better quality - have a talk to them.

You probably need to measure your rear rotor diameter as they come in some very similar sizes - 253mm & 256mm IIRC - either way, nobody seems to know until you get the diameter measured properly.

You realise your old pads will work on the new calipers (just in case you already have good pads).

just make sure the slider pins are clean & lubricated & the machined channels the pads rest in are clean & slightly lubricated.

Ughhh...I have a 1.8T (118TSI). How can I found out what my front struts are? Lol...

Oh right, so if I wanted to fit the GTI rear calipers too I would still need to know what my current rotors are? I thought I could just get the OEM size of the mk5 GTI and fit it to the Octavia
