Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • From X1 to Octavia RS?

    Hi all

    So I used to be a Jetta TDi owner..
    The car was loads of fun to drive, had a great boot and fantastic economy.. but I get the urge to change ever 2 or so years..

    I considered a used Octavia RS.. but ended up getting an X1 for $40k (2010 model) wanting a mini SUV with hatch loading and well.. the badge.. Also from my initial test drive it was a hoot to drive with fantastic handling..

    But now after owning an X1.. I find it actually quite boring to drive. For some reason the magic I felt in the test drive hasn't come across in everyday ownership. It feels slow..The quality is a bit on the poor side and fuel economy is shocking for a diesel (no better than 9.3L/100kms and about 560-580kms a tank)

    I'm now thinking of selling and moving to an Octavia RS (used one.. MkII)
    The MKIII would be asesome but its not out and well it would be a out of my budget..

    Has anyone gone from a similar car (BMW X1) to an Octavia ? Thoughts.. especially on the driving /handling ability

    not to sure if its similar but i went from driving my 2008 ford Territory Turbo to a 2010 VRS wagon.
    Its was on gas and gets 250-260km to the tank (45ltr gas), great performance and all the rest you can expect from a $50k car.
    front seat space is negliable, but is not as wide. boot space is smaller but still very usable....i think the x1 has a tiny useable boot space.
    insurance was cheaper, fuel i now use premium and it costs me 70-80 p/tank and i get about 600km city short drives.

    in my opinion once you get over driving a front wheel drive the skoda is a great car.
    the VRS is much better value for money and will suit almost every application.

    i chose the VRS over a 05 5 series wagon for value for money, the golf wagon because it was boring, a jetta because i liked the wagon, a subaru for fuel consumption, and the supurb because the octavia had the VRS goodies.

      My sister jumped from a 05 e90 320i which had oil leaks and reliability issues up the wazoo to a 09 Octavia 118tsi and she's been very happy. The boot space is massive and you can easily upgrade the bluetooth, iPod and satnav to the latest with minimal effort.

      The badge is a two way street too, she found contractors would charge more for house work if they saw the BMW, the same for workshops too and of course how people treat you on the road.

          I've done a fair few klms in my parents XTRAIL. I can't find any reason to get one of those over a vRS. The Skoda does everything the Xtrail does, but is also fun to drive and isn't an SUV.

            I had an XTrail as a loan car from the repairer when my Octavia was being fixed. HATED it. Lumbering great POS, and with the CVT it felt like I was never in the right gear.

              I had a ride in the back seat of an X3 from the airport to BMW dealer in QLD to copilot my mate's 325 purchase back to Sydney.
              I thought the interior of the X3 was right up there with a Lancer for materials and build quality. And the comfort in the back seat was right up there with a minibus ride from Pnom Pen to Ho Chi Minh City.
              Overall impression was very poor.
              The 3 series was nice but I got the feeling that BMW are milking every bit of profit they can out of their SUVs.

              Really happy with my vRS in all respects 2.5 years into ownership.

                Well the X1 is a few grades down on a X3 so you can imagine my dissatisfaction

                  I moved from a Kia Sorento Si CRDi (first of new shape - MY10) to my Octy vRS TDI.
                  Ride quality is the same, hard but not too hard. Steering has the same sort of feel, weighty but not heavy yet very sure footed for a large SUV!
                  146kW/436Nm in the 2.2L Sorento through a slush box vs 125kW/350Nm through a real clutch in the Octy, but the Sorento was at least 500kg heavier (not including the full storage compartments) means they both felt quick yet the Octy is just that little bit quicker.
                  Interior quality in the Octy is nicer, soft touch and whatnot. I still love the Sorento's, and nobody (zei20t) can talk me out of it.

                  I recently went window shopping in all the various dealerships in Wollongong NSW, and the only three vehicles that I felt impressed with were an Octavia Scout with leather ($50k), Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography w/ two-tone leather ($200k), and Audi A8L ($220k)... What does that say?
                  This includes the likes of Nissan, VW (new golf inc.), Mercedes, Holden (VF commodore not inc., I really like the inside of that and good luck to them with sales!), Ford, Mazda, etc etc etc.

                  I got my Octavia in Dec 2011, it just clocked 121,500km today. A tank of fuel lasts me 850-1,000km depending on traffic and I don't have a light foot.
                  My next car will be an Octavia, and the one after that... etc etc.

                  I reckon do it.
                  Plus, the community is fantastic.

                    I have gone from a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 [Jap Import] Twin Turbo V6 running 14psi of boost & making 175awkw this was my daily drive to 2010 vRS 125TDi, I still have the galant for fun drives.

                    So go for it. Octavia's are a very nice drive for everyday use

                      I came from an E53 X5 4.8is and haven't regretted it. The Skoda feels alive after that behemoth. The X5 was faster but doesn't feel it. The Skoda feels just as well built and I enjoy driving the Skoda whereas the X5 felt detached. Plus I sold the X5 and got the Skoda and another car. Bonus!!!
