  • Introduction to 1NSANE

I thought it was about time I did an intro thread on here. First a bit about myself I guess. My name is Ben and I'm from Melbourne. I've had a few highly modified cars before and that's where my forum name comes from.

1NSANE was the plate sitting on my FG XR6 turbo. In it's final guise it had 455rwkw on E85 but I started getting really paranoid about police presence whenever I took it out of the driveway. That was problematic when it was my daily driver so I made the hard decision to sell it. I regret that decision as it was a wild ride. 1NSANE in it's first iteration can be seen below.

Once I got rid of that I was thinking what different daily I can buy. I thought I might go with a bit of euro prestige so I was looking at Audi A4's with the 3.2 engine and quattro, BMW 335's, and a few other prestige cars. Someone suggested the BMW X5 4.8is to me which I scoffed at until I read up on them. This was the precursor to the X5M so I decided to take a closer look. Long story short I ended up buying one because I figured it was like a fast wagon and I like wagons.

I sold it roughly 6 months later as it was killing my passion for cars. I didn't want to do anything to it, it couldn't decide if it wanted to be a sportscar or a cruiser, the transmission and the air strut broke during my short tenure and cost the BMW dealership $12000 to fix and led to me not trusting it anymore, plus I just wasn't bonding with it. On it's plus side is that it had the most glorious exhaust note of anything this side of a 63 AMG Mercedes. Real muscle car note.

Ok so the search was on again. This time I decided to get a weekend car and a DD. My choice of weekend car ended up being the venerable Mazda MX5. With it's open top motoring, rear wheel drive chassis and just general awesomeness it was an easy choice. Combined with the fact that I had one before and knew them inside out helped and it was cheap. Enter MEANMX.

I bought it lightly modified and then have modified it a lot lol. It will soon be turbocharged as well to add to the fun.

Weekend car done it was onto the DD. I wanted something practical but still fun so I started looking at a variety of different cars. I sort of settled on a Pirelli Golf GTI but while I was at a dealership looking at one the Octavia VRS caught my eye. Being a general sort of car guy I knew about them but not a huge amount so I started researching them and I liked what I saw. Took a 12 model out for a spin and I was impressed but I didn't want DSG as I've had enough of autos for the time being. Started looking around the for sales but manuals are hard to come by. I definitely wanted manual, wagon and preferably race blue. My options were 1 car for sale. It was an 09 with 93,000k's and $26,000 the owner claimed it was immaculate. My only other option was to get a brand new but my budget got eroded with the MX5. So I ummed and ahhed and looked at different cars then I was back on car sales plugging in my search criteria again. Again only this one car came up but it was now at $23,500. Thought it was worth checking out so I took my mate with me to have a look. It wasn't as immaculate as the owner was claiming. It was still a great car but not quite worth the asking price. I offered him 21k for it and then stuck to my guns. Lots of sms'ing back and forth and alot later that day he accepted the offer. This is what bought.

I love it. Smooth, powerful, practical, roomy, luxurious, but also high. Hmmmm need to fix that. I looked at the common coilover kits normally bought for these cars and didn't really like the fact that ride height couldn't be adjusted without altering your preload via the spring. I ended up finding out that BC makes a coilover for the Mk5 gti which should fit. I couldn't find much information about it except that on the UK BC site they list the skoda as using the same suspension. Bit the bullet and ordered them and put them in. They fit perfect but I feel that the BC's are a little harsh for DD duties so I might look at changing the springs to ones with a softer rate. Also the front is at the limit of it's adjustment without using the spring perch to lower it more. I'm ecstatic with the height thought and it looks a million bucks to me. I also got the windows tinted which is a necessity on my cars. This is how it is now. Although it is a bit lower now that it has settled.

I don't know if the 1NSANE plates will ever end up on this car but I'm going to try. I have the front splitter from the group buy coming. I'm also planning on painting the wheels an anthracite colour, painting the roof rack black, getting some spacers and then covering the bonnet and roof in gloss black vinyl. I'm spending too much time and money on the MX5 at the moment but the VRS will have it's day in the not too distant future

Sorry for the long post but I'm hoping when I pull my finger out this will be my build thread as well. Hope to meet some of you soon.

There's something about race blue wagons that just screams "put gloss black on me"

Its good to see more people buying the right colour, and the right transmission
      Finally some diversity!... Sort of.

Welcome to the forums - I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself.
You should come up to Sydney for a meet some time! Both of you, of course!

Thanks for the welcome guys. We will get together MountainBikeMike unfortunately not this Sunday lol. This time of year seems to be the birthday hot spot.

My folks live in Sydney so I tend to drive up occasionally so a meet is not out of the equation.

Thanks mate but I'm not sure if it will ever reach that status. I will try though and the plates are ready if it does. Love this car though. I've had it a couple of months now and I just really enjoy getting into it. I think I may have and aftermarket exhaust as well but I'm not 100% as it looks stock, but god it sounds good. It will require a more detailed look.

I've always been happy with the stock exhaust, has a grumble when booted and doesn't drone. Its louder outside than you think as well, I used to not always notice it, but my wife always heard me coming home a street away.

My wife loves MX-5s, something we always meant to get, but we always got something more practical and then kids came along. I've been toying with the idea of buying a Golf Cabrio as the kids can go in the back, or a used Lexus IS 250c, but will probably just get another RS at the end of next year.

We don't really want to deal with a 3rd car as well as prefer them all garaged. Europcar used to hire them out so we took one out for a weekend, I have half a mind to ask the guy up the end of the street if we can hire his from him! He rarely lets it out of the garage though.

I'm still not sure if it is a stock exhaust or not as I haven't had a look yet. It's not loud but way louder than I would expect a car like this to be. Looking through the history the other day he took the car to the dealer about some clunking from the rear and they told him they couldn't do anything due to aftermarket exhaust so maybe it does have one. It's certainly not in your face otherwise I would have known straight away, but I would have thought if stock sounded this good people would have mentioned it. I will solve this soon by having a look.

I love my mx5 and have since they came out in 1989. Except for a lack of power they are a perfect sports car. Mine will be getting turboed soon and I'll be looking at running 180-200rwkw which will be fun in a 1000kg car. After that all the big work will be done to the mx and I can concentrate on the Skoda. I thought having 3 cars would be perfect but there always seems to be something to do which can be frustrating at times. It is nice to have a play car though that you aren't as worried about cops with because you still have a daily.

as woofy said, the stock exhaust is audible from the outside. its quiet muted from the inside.

i still grin from ear to ear with my APR exhaust
                  it sounds exactly like this......

I've been absent from the Mazda forums since my 6 went in 2011, but I wouldn't be pushing a little mx5 engine quite that hard. The SP version made by skunkworks in Sydney pushed things hard but seemed renowned for issues later in life. The SE which I almost bought a 2mth old version was a bit tamer but more reliable. They drive like a go kart which is part of the appeal I reckon.

After I wrote here yesterday I ended up hiring an 86 for my wife's birthday. Was the GTS version, taking it back tomorrow morning. It's an interesting car but I prefer the RS.

I hate the sound of my exhaust - but I am loathed to spend any money to change that
At high throttle levels there is an awefull hissing sound inside the car from the rear muffer
I put dynamat extreme in the boot and that has made the exhaust and motorway driving quieter

Great sports car - unfortunately I'm not endeared to them
I didn't like the steering feel and hate convertables and there is simply no power to speak of
But they are a perfect car to tinker with at home - can do everything yourself
                      I've seen turbo/race MX5's doing 1:05 at Wakefield - that's terribly fast!
And they can do that all day without overheating the engine or brakes etc

Power is never free - expensive to get power
Then you start upgrading suspension/brakes/tyres to deal with the power
Then you need to rebuild the engine or replace the turbo
That's just the way it goes...

I don't like the looks but it's got more poke than the MX5, handles well and is priced well
I was in a tuning shop the other day, they had one in pieces installing a turbo kit, should be awesome

In looking for (middle aged) track fun I bought a Nissan 350Z (49%/51% weight distribution)
It's got a great combination of handling ability and adequate power (220kw)
The sound of the 3.5L V6 at 6,600rpm is like being in motorsport heaven - sounds like a mini V8
(Aweful to drive in a rush hour traffic jam however)
My wife loves how the exhausts make the floor warm, she sits there happy with her shoes off
But she is nervous every time we come to a large/open roundabout as I delight in the speed and g-forces the 350Z can achieve (I would lap the Skoda pretty quickly)

But then I get into the Skoda and notice just how quick the Skoda is through the (DSG) gears
(People that have a go at me are all washed out when they have to change gear)
I love the torque of the tubo pushing you back into the seat (the 350Z accelerates a bit faster but does not feel like it)
The VAG FWD Turbo setup really is a great configuration, practical, compact and fun

After a day of the 86, I'm not really a fan. It was the GTS version, the car sounded OK, but the auto was awful, pity they didn't have manuals available. I took it up the mountains, but as I had kids, couldn't do too much and certainly couldn't switch it into the VCS sports mode. I wasn't planning on drifting down the curves anyway. For not much more length they really could have given the back seat passengers some legroom, there is pretty much none. The inside is also very typically Toyota plain, nothing is very inutive apart from the paddles, and for the price of the top end 86 it should have more goodies. The complete lack of an info screen in the main dash was annoying. I know they went for the stripped feel, but most of that stuff is sheer profiteering.

It's pretty spartan so I would view it as a cheap/new track car and leave it for that. You could get the Focus ST for less and have twice the fun in reality. Apart from the lack of the back seat the MX-5 with the top down is much more fun. I have friends with the 350 track edition and that would be where it's at but will see where modders get the 86. I think the majority are going to be young P platers with the base model. The malaysian and Indonesian guys with the BRZs at my wifes accounting work, are the most placid rice racers with atrocious driving skills. Having said all that, if I was a younger guy in my 20s its not a bad car to get, but the Skoda has spoilt me.

I liked the 86 but for me I had the option of a more expensive daily and a cheap toy or expensive toy and cheap daily. I spend more time in the daily so that's where the money will go. I felt at home in the 86 and if I was looking at a new mx5 and a new 86 I might even go with the 86 just because it is cheaper.

As far as the mx5 goes I love having it roofless. I'm the type you will see on a cold night with the roof down. If it's not raining the roof is down. Combined with the cheapness of parts, the go-kart like nature and the ease of working on it you're onto a winner. Cops think you are a hairdresser so they let you off and I love looking at it!!!! Bonus. Bad news it is very, very badly lacking power and torque and will be quite slow unless you flatten it and redline it every gear. It should be able to deal with 180 at the rear wheels reasonably well and I'm fairly gentle with my cars. If the motor blows then it is an excuse for a rebuild and more boost.

The Skoda is really not much faster but the torque is awesome for a 2L four. The thing is that it just does everything so well and is not really lacking in any one department.

One day Martin I will dynamat my rear like that but more to keep out road noise. The Skoda is lacking a bit when it comes to sound deadening but that is only a small complaint. I also love the 350Z but that's a bit out of my budget for a toy. Awesome car and I believe also a little underrated.

Back on track with more Skoda news. I'll be picking up my new lip for the Skoda from Daniel tomorrow. It's a fantastic price and can't wait to fit it over the weekend hopefully. Big thanks to Daniel for organising it. I'm also probably going to go in with the DNS stereo group buy as soon as I can see a decent video and that will fix one of my biggest complaints with my Skoda which is lack of bluetooth. Having DVD, 8" screen, and sat nav is also a fantastic bonus. Anyway, pics soon.

Yes, the Skoda is a cheap and cheerful work horse that punches above it's weight
