Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I too wonder why they don't just use one of the comercial sat nav providers who do it better. No doubt it's a cost factor, though you can't help wondering how much it costs a car maker to come up with even a so-so system and if that's really cheaper.

I use my old TomTom up on the dash in the right corner - it has speed warning beeps and is good for a road bend indication almost in line of site. The cars unit I zoom out as an overalll indicator of where I am.

Its not the maps that are the trouble. Its what VW or whoever builds the operating system for the unit does with them.
They get them and then adapt them to the system BADLY. IF they just used a Tomtom system or a Garmin all would be well.

Mazda now have a Tomtom in their cars.
