Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Updating satnav maps

i own a 2010 rs and it would appear the maps are from 2010 as well.

what is the best / most cost effective way to upgrade the maps?

Have a read of this thread, yes its long. in the last few posts, there is a link to download the latest maps.

WHile youre at it, maybe install new firmware. but make sure youre installing the correct version

Apologies for my total ignorance, but does this all relate to updating the std Nav sys that came with our Octavia II Scout 2010 (Columbus? RNS510 - same thing?)? I'm keen to update but have never tried loading anything onto it. I'm assuming I need to update the firmware and then download the later version maps? Is the only way to install/update to install CDs/DVDs? Ours has a USB cnxn for iphone in the glove box? Any use?

Is there an idiot's guide from square one?

                  Columbus = RNS510

Updating is via CD/DVD only. can't use SD-Card or USB connection.

                    Instructions ..

Download the file in my last post Burn it to a DVD-R using imgburn at no more than 4 spd

Insert into RNS510/Columbus, wait 15 minutes observing the stages on the screen Hold breath it will tell you when its finished.

No need to update firmware to update maps.

Go back through the thread there are pictures of the screens that appear when updating. Simples

'Simples' is indeed the word! Many thanks to both you and d-shadow. Once I get my head around the basics I can happily head into the unknown. Out of interest, why do you need to update your firmware? To enable customising to allow more space for music kinda thing?

And when you say 'slow' (4spd ... sounds like an old gearbox!) and recommend imgburn, I gather that counts the burner in this Mac Laptop out?

Updating firmware does give you different partitions with more music capacity. Also gives other advantages.

You are on your own with a Mac have a read of the thread others have done it on them

I'll open the Macbook in Windows (my own little partition) and Google imgburn. Sounds like it might be easier that way - although the Mac copes with just about anything these days.

                          Thanks again.

Hey guys I have recently updated to v6 maps. But now when I use the nav screen on my rns510 I don't see street names. I do see the name of the street I am currently on via the MFD. Although I am certain in the past I would see side street names on the nav screen. Handy when you need to find a street near by and cant be arsed using the 'enter suburb, enter street' function. Any thougts? I was thinking to reinstall the maps.Does someone know how to force the maps to reinstall?
