  • How-to:- Fitting Chrome Headlight switch on Octavia

a quick FYI for those interested in replacing their headlight switch with a chrome version like this one.

their specific for the VWs. since skoda is part of the vag family, i bought one of a forum member, with the aim to replace mine. it looked exactly the same and figured it would b plug'n'play.
    BUT they're NOT!!

1st problem was the switch panel cover (the one with the writing). the cover for skodas is not a perfect round like that on the vw. so the vw switch won't slot in and fit properly, as is.
so i had to take the cover off my skoda switch, and put it on the vw switch.
sweet - it fits.......but the locking pins don't click in place. so the switch panel can still be pulled out, say when pulling it to switch the foglights on. couldn't see anything obvious, so i thought i'd get to it later.

2nd problem - the lighting was the vw red, not the skoda green! i didn't like that cause it didn't match the rest of the interior illumination.

using a torx screw, i removed the back panel and swapped the PCB from the skoda switch to the vw switch. it simply slides out - just pull. no screws or clips. the LEDs r soldered onto the PCB.
for some reason, the back cover would now not close flush. atleast now i had the skoda green lighting back.
the locking pins still didn't click in place. hmmm.

2 weeks later i decided to solve the locking pins mystery. both the switch module were exactly the same in dimensions. both locking pins were in exactly the right spot.
after lots of head scratching, i spotted the issue with the contact switch plastic thingy. the skoda version has a notch, that slots into switch body. unfortunately the vw switch body does not cater for the notch. so i had to swap the contact switch plastic thingy. it has two plastic clips holding it down to the PCB, allowing it to b easily unclipped.
hooray......everything sat & closed flush, with the locking pins now finally locking in place.

    ah the relief.

    here's a couple of shots

    Cool bit of info here!

But I must ask... Why not just swap the rotating switch handle itself over? :p

Definately a better look. Between the MFSW and that switch (they look exactly the same), I can pretend I am still in my A3...until the FWD axle tramp kicks in

If anyone wants to order one of these switches with the chrome surround the part no. is

                  3C8941431N.

You will need to order it from a VW Dealership as it is from a Passat. In the UK they are £55.54p which is AUS$91 approx.

as per my 1st post, they're also available at ecs tuning for US$84.95.
5K0898006 - part number is different, but should work the nonetheless.

shipping alone however will probably cost u just as much!!

i'm glad i got mine from a forum member for a steal at AU$25

Dark shadow. Not knocking your thread as I wish I had seen this when I had the same part. I broke mine trying to strip it down and got the part I listed instead along with the chrome window switches.

The one I listed requires less modification to work. I will dig out a tutorial I did but it is basically a swap of the plastic surround that has the light symbols and auto etc. you also remove the chrome trim piece off the handle and jobs a good un.

The part you listed is from a MK6 Golf iirc so is slightly different to the Passat version and requires the modification you had to do.

                        all good mate.
my initial plan was to simply pull one out, and slide the other in.
but that was a no goer.
next plan, as u said, a swap of the plastic surround.
the rest.....well, is explained at the beginning of this thread.

with chrome trim piece on the handle - on this version, it can be removed too.
discovered this while trying to see if i could remove the handle part alone and do a swap between switch bodies.

yup, i got the part from a forum member with a fine looking golf gti.
