Window tint for vRS wagon

Hi, I will be picking up my near new vRS on Saturday and want to tint the windows. The dealer offered something called Intelligent Cell Technology (ICT) for a special price of $695 (normally $895).

It sounds a lot to me, but she said that some tint places can break the clips in the doors and leave them broken inside to rattle around, a scare tactic most likely but I guess could be true of some dodgy tint places.

So I'm guessing that $695 is too much even for a wagon (I'm thinking it should cost around $500) and that this ICT tint is nothing special. I obviously want a good installation with a good product so should I decline the dealers offer and go elsewhere? Any recommendations in the eastern suburbs in Melbourne? Will probably go for the darkest legal tint.

Get it done after you take it home then you wont have to pay the dealers added on cut

Same with Paint and Fabric Protection My wife got it done on one vehicle for about $1000 could have got the same place to do it for under $500 if we had known. Had another vehicle tinted and he didnt remove anything at all so I think they are having a lend of you.

I have always used Darren from Dr Tint 0432124149.
Will do whatever film you want, very well priced and I haven't had a problem on any of my or the partner's cars in about 5 years.
A mate had the tiniest bubble in his (even when it was pointed out, I could only spot it from one angle), and Darren came back out and fixed it that week.

The dealers outsource the tinting to a dedicated tinting company and then whack a very healthy profit on top. Save yourself about $500 and get it done after you have taken delivery of the car - about $300-350 will get the job done. I had my Golf tinted (including the sunroof) for $280 about 18months ago and its by far the best tint job ive ever had on a car before. A wagon might cost a little more but not much. Unfortunately this tinter (Hunters Hill Window Tinting) is in Sydney, so its of no use to recommend him to you seeing our in Melbourne.

I'm in Sydney, so that doesn't help you for a recommendation, but I just wanted to say that I agree with Hillbilly. And Lucas_R is spot on with his summation of so-called "dealer" or "factory" tinting, which is outsourced to an undisclosed third party tinting business. You'll be far better off financially by organising the tinting to be done by a reputable business yourself. You'll also have the advantage of knowing exactly which film goes onto your glass, because you'll get to choose it.

As for Intelligent Cell Technology, I did a Google search and found nothing. It may be something like Transition lenses, and I'm no fan of those at all. When sitting in the shade and looking out into a sunny area they're about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Saab had a go at photochromic auto glass at one time, but it was a dud. Having waffled on about all that I don't think it could be "intelligent" glass at that price, which is about par for standard tinting done by a dealer. And $500 is way too much for good quality film on a wagon, which only has two extra small glasses than a sedan. I don't think you'd need to pay more than $300 for a first class job with a top quality film.

$500 is still about $450 above what the products actully cost. paint and fabric protection is the single biggest rip of in the entire auto industry.

When I brought my Skoda the dealer threw the tinting in for free (after the price was negotiated and without me actually asking for it to be done).

I have a good relationship with a tint guy, he did my wagon and didnt need to remove any bits of the interior.... I wouldnt worry.

Tint on my wagon cost me $250.

The tint on my hatch was about $300. They didn't remove any panels or break anything

I had my VRS Wagon done at Tint a car in Lilydale 2 months ago excellent job.I have also used Rob Tait from Cartint in Ringwood,He has recently done my Focus ST. He also does an excellent job.Hope that helps in Esatern Suburbs Melb

Also have used Rob Tait. He does pull the panels off though. I don't think any of the dealer tints I have had before do that, the easy way to tell is you can't put the windows down if they haven't pulled the panels, as the tint edge isn't below the seals and hasn't fully cured in those areas. That is assuming it was done the day before which car dealers tend to do before pickup.

Hi guys, I had the tint done but I have an issue. Since I didn't want panels taken off I have noticed a slight gap between the tint and normal glass on the front windows near the triangular shaped panel (corner panel with the vents for demisting the window). I suppose he couldn't get to that spot. Can this panel be taken off easily without taking off any other parts of the door panel? If so I'll have to talk to the tinter about getting it done again (hopefully with no cost).
