  • mobile phone holder/ mounting - Octavia

Does anyone have experience with "hold my phone" mounts:

Right Hand Mount - Octavia 05-12 - Skoda - Car Dashmounts
    +/-
Fixed Install Holder Otterbox Defender Case - iPhone Shop

bit pricey but looks more substantial / functional than the multitude of cheap options I have tried and binned. Bit concerned about trim damage by the mount?
Anyone have another setup that works (my BT is the dealer fit option thrown in as a deal sweetener that is only good for answering calls)?

    thanks

That looks remarkably similar to the Brodit holder I bought from Apple iPhone 4 Brodit holders and mounts. I have had the LH mount for a long time on my golf, all good. Easy to adjust for different cases (silicon skin, iphone case and now a Vapor Element) and secure. I got the pass through, was initially using it with an Alpine HU, but now just using it for the charger - which with the Ios6.1.3 'upgrade' is every day...

I would not be happy about any mount that covers the air con outlets

The price of that unit ($137 AUD) is utterly outrageous, it's a ten fold mark up that simply lines the pocket of the vendor

I used to use phone mounts with a windscreen suction mount, got them off eBay for $10~$20, work fine

(My Octavia has the full BT so the phone now lives in that top dashboard compartment)

I have an active antenna mount for my Lumia 920 (check my timeline thread here: Mysticality's Timeline)
Works great... I usually get +1 bar of signal (1/5 so 20%) and it even works with the 4G.
Covers a mount, yes, but thats alright because I'm usually the only one in the car - so the other three are pointed at me anyway.

          Price is outrageous…
Looks like airflow would still come around the phone and I think I could live with that. No one else likes the air on them...
Have tried suction mounts. The only place where I can reach the phone that it would not be a serious obstruction to vision (or be in the sun all day) is in the bottom RHS of the screen. Seems to be too much curvature in the glass to get them to stick there..

          Last fitting from ebay melted...

I recently bought a new tablet to replace my aging (2y/o) Galaxy Tab 7", and ever since I got the car the tablet had been mounted in that exact spot - bottom RHS. Worked fine.

            New one isn't mounted because I can't find a 7" tablet mount I like.

I use a Kidigi mount I think they are brilliant & <$50. They use a standard mount base so it wouldn't be hard to turf out the suction cup & bend up a bracket to suit

I have simplest mount in the world.

I got an off cut of dark grey foam from Clark Rubber, cut it into a circle with a kitchen knife so it fits flush in one of my drink holders. Then I just cut out a small section across the top to slide my iPhone 5 into sungly. A small piece of double sided tape keeps it secure and I have never had trouble with it. I rarely need to look at my phone when driving because I can see who is calling me on the MFD and head unit.

I have since done the same for my wife's car.

Works a treat and didn't cost me a cent (Clarke's let me take the rubber).

When I am monitoring the engine diagnostics with my phone I put a $20 eBay mount in that location, stuck to the windscreen, works fine

I used them and got a few parts for my phone. The upside for the Golf is the Angle mount goes in the centre next to the radio so doesn't block any air vents which was one of my concerns:

Angled Mount - Golf VI 09-12 - Volkswagen - Car Dashmounts

At alomst $50 it's a crazy price for what is essentially a piece of plastic, but the upside is that you don't have to drill any holes and you don't have a suction cap on your windscreen.

I grabbed the requisite iPhone5 holder which allows passthrough of the stock lightning cable:

Padded Holder For Cable Connect USB - iPhone Shop

Again, pretty expensive for a basic holder, but it's quite solid and when it comes time to upgrade the phone you can just buy a new cradle and use the same mount.

I thought I had some photo's of the install process, but it seems not. It really is click and play, very very easy.

I made it hard(er) for myself and decided to hard wire in an additional lighter socket hidden under the centre console to make the whole thing 98% hard wired (I then used a lighter socket to USB power in there). The purpose is if I ever need a different power connector it's as simple as popping off a few covers and plugging in either a new USB cable or a whole new socket if needed.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

The clicON mounts are pretty good, the original guys who sell them here were Proclip, not sure if they still do or are cheaper. I noticed in the new OCtavia they come with a phone holder that goes in the cupholder ala as per above. The cupholders look identical so I suspect we can just buy them as a part. I think the proclip attachment down near the gearknob is still the best point. I've debated getting one for both my last two cars.

                        Guys,
Thanks for this. Some other options to look at once I get home and off satellite internet speed / download quota. I have ordered another ebay holder that cost 3 cups of coffee (that will likely not work but will give it a go) while I decide if the cost of the IP / neat/clean installation is worth it (I am thinking yes). Problem with cup holder mounts is that I use the cup holders, and I think the phone would be a little to low to be useable?

Hawk – sounds like you have a nice clean install. I know its Golf v Octavia, but does the centre angle mount interfere with the passenger at all?

mobile phone holder/ mounting - Octavia

That was one of my concerns as I was originally looking for something to sit on the drivers side of the RNS screen, but it seems to work fine with no issue from passengers.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
