  • Engine Number? Where is it?

So the people doing the Blue Slip on my car have just called and left a message to say they have to take some things off to be able to read the engine number. Where is it and can it be read without doing this?

Helpful into would be that it is a Pre-FL RS TSI

Apparently they have to take off coolant hoses, electrical stuff, part of the coolant system etc to be able to just read the engine number and then put it all back together again. Thanks for the surprise hour or two of labour on top of the apparently easy 30 minute job!

There is a sticker on the side of the engine (drivers side) which has the engine number on it. Its actually on the plastic cover that protects the camshaft wheel and timing belt.

They should be able to see it with just a torch. See my previous post.

Yeah, it's down near the starter motor. Can't sight it without pulling stuff off.

Apparently the label with the engine number printed on it, isn't sufficient.

Thanks Lucas. Just called them and they said they can see that but they need to see it on the block to verify it is the same etc. Copped an earful of attitude about it too from them. I should be the pissed one, not them!

Yea but they have to make sure that # matches to the block as it is being registered in NSW for the first time blah blah blah

I thought VW no longer had the engine number on the block & had it on the head?

I know that's how it is on the 1.4 twincharger - almost as if they knew they would be changing plenty of short motors.

Just picked it up. $308 instead of the usual $58 flat fee!

Now to choose if I go Yellow NSW plates on the Yellow RS or white with black writing standard plates...

Should you be paying for them not being able to do their job?

I have rego'd 3 cars in QLD, an A4, my S3 and the Polo GTI. All took them ages to find the number. IIRC they have access to information on where to find the numbers, they certainly do in South Australia.

                          damn....that was an expensive exercise!!!

as for plates - black plates with yellow writing presuming that's possible!

What twit decided to obscure the engine number like that...they always want to see the stamp. I was thinking of selling it to my family interstate, but this would be awful.

Oh touche, guess whose parents just called at the local bodgy mechanic who had no idea where the engine number was. Or even where it was on the myriad of stickers in the engine bay, door fram and under the rear floor
