Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New vRS DSG reduction noise

I own a new vRS for 3 weeks. I have had the 2-3k RPM rattle noise in my 2.0 TSI which I got rid of last week by attaching a dampening clamp. Having +1700km on the odometer I started using the paddle shifters to play a bit with the engine and transmission. After having manual gearboxes in the past, I really enjoy the 6-speed DSG. I miss the manual a bit but not enough to regret buying the DSG. I hope at least...
Here is my concern. When I manually reduce the gear (5 to 4, 4 to 3, etc) e.g. when approaching the traffic lights this is what happens: first the car seems to accelerate a bit for a fraction of a second (I suppose that this is caused by the releasing clutch), then I hear a short strange noise similar to clapping, then the revs increase and the engine starts to brake as expected. All this is really not longer than a second in total and happens only if I reduce gear with the gas pedal released completely. When I reduce gear with acceleration (when overtaking someone), there is no sound and the gear reduction seems quicker. Also, when I just let go of the gas pedal before the traffic lights and the car gradually slows down, the transmission changes the gears down without any noise and very smoothly.
After having the rattling noise I might be a bit supersensitive to noises coming from my new car. But anyway, I thought I might ask if this clapping noise and general behavior that I described is normal.

    Thanks!

    vRS DSG Noise Problems

Seems like this is not a new problem – but an old one

    Hope that helps…

Hard to tell mate from waht you have said...

Best way is to compare it with another similar model on the same section of road.
Take another new car for a drive to see if it is the same, and hence is normal.

no matter how much i try - my manual down gear changes are not as good as the dsg's down gear changes.
i'm not as smooth, and not as effective with the engine braking - paddles or gear lever.

        i don't get any acceleration/surge, but every now & then i do get a clamp/clunk.
as u said, none that is evident with the dsg doing the gear changes.

Thank you guys for your thoughts on this.
Masker, the video you cite is about the newer 7-speed transmission, which is known to have problems. I have not been able to find any vids regarding the older 6-speed DSG.

After dArK5HaD0w's post I am less worried but I guess that going for a test drive with a new car is a good idea. Unfortunately I'm on a business trip now and this will have to wait till middle December.

            New vRS DSG reduction noise

What you are describing is the throttle blipping on manual down changes coupled with the gear change. Its to stop compression lock on the down changes locking the front wheels an for when you are higher in the rev range. When slowing down you are better to let the car decide when to change down.

Ok, I understand. The nasty thing is that this produces an unpleasant sound...
I am aware that DSG is an automated manual, not a classical automatic transmission with a hydraulic torque converter. Is this the reason why in the latter there is no sound like in DSG when doing the same manual reduction?
