7DSG - Clutch packs getting replaced

G’Day fellow members. Need some advice on the issue I am facing with my Octavia (MY 2010, 90 TSI 7SP DSG). When taking off or driving in heavy stop start traffic, the car shows no interest to do so smoothly. It feels like there is very less friction as the car revs up too quickly and if I take off with a slightly heavy foot on the throttle and let go immediately, the car would slam into second gear with heavy engine breaking. It behaves similarly when turning into a street with downhill slope (the car would stick in 1 gear for a while and rev up quickly then slam into second gear).

My main concern is the hesitation when taking off. It is not as smooth as it should be and behaves rough if stepped hard. My car had a flywheel replaced last year which solved one problem at that time i.e. shuddering or juddering (can’t remember what it was) when taking off. But this problem has been there ever since the flywheel was replaced. It wasn't this bad initially but is growing every day. My worst experience was recently on my trip to Sydney where the car almost red lined while going uphill in first gear and predictably slammed into second. Also, at times (especially going uphill in 5th or 6th gear), the car would sway back and forth as if struggling to generate enough power and yet not shifting down.

I want to know if there is something wrong with my car and if so, how I should approach the service department as my next service is due in a month. I do not want to look stupid in front them.

That sounds more like a dodgy mechatronic unit, however your symptoms are very similar to a polo 6r owner, nomad38x an his polo has gone through 3 mechatronic units and 2 clutch packs to try and fix it and the problem isn't fixed.

RE class action, Chinese government at this stage have issued VW with a mandatory recall for 400,000+ vehicles fitted with the DSG7 dry clutch gearbox. Just think, with all the publicity about how poor this gearbox does its job, what is everyone's resale going to be like.......?

I bought a Man Octavia over the 147 Jetta for exactly this reason and then as much as I wanted bought something else instead of a Superb as it only came with this DSG. You would think VW Australia have weighed up the cost of extended warranty to cover this and obviously it would cost them too much so have ignored it. If that is correct it is a pretty big concern in itself, but maybe statutory warranty might bite them back in out of warranty cases.

Bumping this thread to get some opinions. I posted this in the massive DSG thread in the Mk6 Golf section but nobody replied.

For those of you who have had these DSG problems intermittently, when is it most likely to happen?

My Octavia will be out of warranty in July so I need to take the car to the dealer WHILE it is misbehaving so they can see that it's happening. I've only had the bad shudders in D1/D2 a few times since I've owned the car (bought it used in December last year) and don't really know how to make it happen on demand. The times it has been a problem were when I've been driving for over half an hour in a fair bit in traffic - lots of stop/start and crawling along. I had some spare time today and drove around for about 2 hours near the dealer trying to induce DSG shudder and the bloody car wouldn't misbehave! Any ideas?

My sister had her Octavia 77TDI 7speed DSG in for routine service yesterday.
Included in the list of work done is:
Recall replacement kit DSG
Software upgrade DSG
This was just done by Peter Warren Skoda. She had not had any problems nor queried the dealer about any DSG issues.
It sounds to like VW Group/Skoda is doing a silent recall during routines servicing while pretending it is not happening.

Roshea - I've been having what I think may be a bit of clutch slip now and then. I experience it when I slow down at an intersection almost to a complete stop (DSG still in second gear), and turning the wheel to the left to turn, as I accelerate into the turn I feel a bit of shudder.

2009fsi - Do you have any more information about the item 'Recall replacement kit DSG'? I think I may have already had the software update when I had a service done earlier this year.

Accelerating from a stop while turning will nearly always result in a shudder.

I had the software upgrade last service - didn't seem to make much difference,

Sorry Cbay, I can't add any more at this stage as my sister didn't ask at the time because she was rushing to an appointment. I've asked her to ring the dealer & ask for an explanation of what this included & if it being done by Skoda Aust to correct the reported DSG7 problems being recalled overseas. Really, she needs to know what exactly has been done to her car. She's like a dog with a bone & has a good auto mechanical understanding, so I expect her to persist until she get the full story.
It is an interesting description, including the word RECALL, but that is the words used on the work list/receipt.

Roshea - thanks for clarifying that. I haven't reached that stage and hope not to! When I had the software upgrade it stopped the odd clunky shifting points, but after some time shudders appeared. the other upgrade at the time was to the power steering.

2009fsi - that was what immediately caught my attention, the words 'recall', 'replacement' and 'kit' sounds like a fairly serious issue regarding the replacement of a combination of parts. if your sister is able to get any info out of the dealer, please do share, would be much appreciated.

Cbay, It seems the recall replaced the DSG ECU & upgraded the ECU software.

FYI - Skoda and Audi recall cars with 7-speed DSG (DQ200):

"Skoda, Volkswagen's Czech-based budget offshoot, has also announced a recall of 1746 Octavia and Superb cars equipped with the seven-speed transmission.

A spokesman for the brand said “We urge any customers who believe they have experienced issues to contact their nearest Skoda dealer”."

Don't some other Skoda vehicles have this transmission too?

So what does this mean? Are they going to recall all the cars involved or contact owners to find out if they have had problems? Or do owners have to contact them?

with a recall, they manufacturer is apparently obligated to contact all owners that they have knowledge of. which I believe is important to at least inform the manufacturer of your details when you purchase a 2nd hand car, in case of things like this.

So Zach, what what did they say was the problem?

I noticed almost the exact same thing you described on my 012 vrs Octavia, it has been happening since i have had it.
I have had the car in twice in Richmond Skoda and they say they can not fault it. On its 15000 service they re-flashed the transmission software, or something along those lines and said to see how i go.

I described the noise similar to an old ford laser with CV worn joints, the clacking sound.
The response was "its new its not going to be the CV joint".
I explained to the service secretary or what ever his title is that its the noise not necessarily the joints them selves. I just don't think, they even listened.
