  • So am I just stupid, or isn't the Columbus a 6 Stacker?

I would have thought that the Columbus sound system would have been a six stacker?

    Am I missing something perhaps?

    Perhaps you're missing a 30gig hard drive?

The columbus is a single stacker. Some Octy's do have a 6 stacker, but not the RS with the Columbus. I think it's pretty standard across the VAG range now that cars with the inbuilt hard drive and SD slot (as well as MDI input) don't have 6 stackers as there's not much need when you can load 20GB of music into the HDD.

To be honest I've rarely played a CD in mine. I've loaded all my itunes library into the HDD, and I've also got the MDI into which I plug my phone (or travelling companions' phones) if I want to mix it up a bit.

Yep I guess so...I have the MDI interface for my wifes Iphone, but I dont know how to load stuff onto the harddrive.
I am a bit backward there...

any help for a gumby would be appreciated.

How do I transfer stuff from Itunes to the harddrive?

It's a while since I've loaded anything on, but it's quite straightforward, just a bit time consuming.

The first thing you need is an SD card (like your camera probably uses), and then you have to navigate itunes to export your library. This is the hard bit. I think Steve Jobs was having a lend of us all with the itunes software. You may need to call in the services of the nearest 14yo to help with this.

Once you've got the music on the card, you basically stick it in the SD slot at the bottom of the unit, and scroll through the menu till you find the right section. I don't have my car with me right now to check, but from memory in the media section there's a pretty straightforward menu for downloading data onto the HDD. I downloaded entire playlists, but it was pretty slow to copy it all across. I think it took about 30 mins in all to stick a few hundred songs in the HDD.

I've got about 10GB worth of stuff on the HD, and it works great!!
Just make sure you have enough time in a journey to transfer everything... It'll take awhile. :S

On the comment about listening to CD's... I've actually got a DVD that lives in mine.

My car has a CD player? Well how old fashioned is that!

Actually I know it has a player but in 2 years and 9 months the player has kept its virginity and probably will until after I sell the car at least. For $39 you can go to Officeworks and buy a 16GB class 6 SDHC card which is more than fast enough for music and carry the equivalent of 20 CD's worth of music so why would you bother with the hassle of carrying the shiny round things around just so they can get scratched?

Quick question: do you have to use I tunes or can you just copy mp3's from an SD card without using apple software?

                  I don't really like I tunes, and I don't have an ipod/iphone.

It's best to not use iTunes. You can just drop whatever folder structure you want onto the sdcard from the file manager (explorer if its windows).
If you have m3u playlists you can put them in the root as long as the playlist references the folder that the actual mp3 file is in.
Ie the playlist file (which you can just view in notepad) needs to reference \pop\artist\album NOT c:\user\desktop\artist\album

I just dump them onto the SD card in Albums.

                        Album title
                        -track1
                        -track2
                        etc

                        Works for me.

Should also mention of course you need to have an SD card reader for your computer. If you don't, head to your nearest computer store and you'll be able to get one for about $20 that plugs into a USB port on your computer.

And of course as others have mentioned, you don't have to use itunes, my comments were just based on an assumption that you have an iphone and all your music is stored in an itunes library. If you've got your music in folders on the computer, just dump all the folders straight onto the SD card.

                              Thanks guys,
I am just so illiterate (see what I did there??) with all this stuff.
I use itunes for buying music...cos thats all I knew how to do.
Then I just burn discs from Itunes.

So...How do I dump / transfer the music from an itunes playlist to the SD card?
I tried to send it to my Sony Ericsson X10 phone, but couldnt work out how to do it.
I thought that if it was on my phone, I could bluetooth it.

I would prefewr to have it on the harddrive though.
Sorry for being so stupid. Any further help for this gumby would be appreciated.
