Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Automatic 12v off no longer working

The 12v cigarette socket in my Octy used to stay powered for 30 minutes after switch-off.

In the last week the power remains on permanently. This has happened after I replaced the passengers side horn with a universal Bosch unit. I don't think it's the horn but as part of the fault diagnosis I was using the battery as a direct power source for the old & new horns.

The automatic interior lights off still works.

Does anyone know if this is a setting in VCDS or where I might look to diagnose this?

More to the point, what key words should I plug into google?

Dont plug it into Google, there's not enough space in the Motronics ECU and you'll confuse your car...

I thought it was an open circuit too, but I must admit I've never tested it...you could rewire the connections over in the fuse box though if its a problem so that its only powered from the ignition circuit. Would want to make sure you don't bypass the fuse though, or put another fuse inline with the 12v socket preferably...

I'm sure mine stays on permanently I have left my GPS plugged in on occasion and it still appears to be powered hours later.
The only think I can think that would turn it off would be low battery voltage.

            Bizarre.

The cigarette lighter socket in the centre console has always turned off after 30 minutes, which is why I've never worried about leaving the car overnight with GPS & phones plugged in.

Actions such as opening the door, lock/unlock wake it back up again for another 30 minute charging session.

It's a known feature of Skodas & VWs

Really? I've come back in the morning and seen the familiar glow of the Nokia charger plugged into the centre console.

Sat nav/radio turns off after half an hour, though.
