Waving at other car drivers stopped about the time of the First World War didn't it? I did not realise that there were people who still did.
Lifting your clutch hand or nodding to other motorcyclists on the open road (never, ever in the city) is still common.
I wave at other car drivers - especially if I'm in one of the company cars. Total strangers but then they spend all day wondering who it was. Good for a laugh.
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
I would wave...but I think we are in the minority....
Except for Mysticality! He was super keen the first time we happened to pass! (lights flashing etc...!!) So was I I guess....
Okay, I admit I may have been freaking out a little bit.
I was the 2nd Octy owner in my area, and yours was the 3rd I had ever seen on the road, apart from the local silver vRS wagon (which was why I looked at Skoda's in the first place! )
That wagon has since disappeared... :/ Although I think the guy may be driving a blue R36 wagon now.
2012 Octavia vRS TDI. Darkside big turbo, 3bar tune, other stuff. 200kW/650Nm.
1990 Mk1 Cabrio. 1.9 IDI w/ 18PSI.
1985 Mazda T3500 adventuremobile. 1973 Superbug. 1972 Volvo 144 in poo-brown.
Not including hers...
Anyone has the sales figure for Skoda in the year 2012? At the end of 2011, Skoda was the star as one f the best performer in 2011. But it seems ery quiet this year.
I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do as well as projected. With VW being so aggressive in their pricing and generous with their equipment, they have effectively killed Skoda.
The Superb Elegance was one of the most value for money car on the market, but with Passat now having GPS and RVC standard, and the arrival of new models from other competitors (eg. Mazda 6), Superb is no longer that much value for money.
Fabia and Superb Ambition were way overpriced in the first place anyway.
Octavia is facing run out, it wouln't do well either.
Roomster, did they sell any one of those?
That leaves the Yeti probably being the only model that keeps Skoda surviving.
Overall, I suspect Skoda didn't do well over 2012.
I remember reading somewhere around August that the Yeti was accounting for a third of all Skoda sales this year and they had sold about 680 Yeti for the year at that time. I haven't heard any sales figures since but they did have a big Yeti promotion in September and have just had a 0% finance offer.

According to this article in the Sydney Morning Herald Skoda sales were just 1 more than last year What's hot and what's not
Given the market was up 10%, Skoda market share has fallen in 2012. Not a good result given the range was expanded with the introduction of Fabia.
There are allegations of some European manufacturers 'dumping' cars on the Australian market because of lack of demand in Europe. If VW was one of those then it would have hurt Skoda.
Well look at Opel, they are going downhill ,factories closing soon and people being put off work. They sell below cost in Germany and it still doesn't help them.
That's the main difference between Opel and Skoda I think. Opel isn't doing well at all overseas, whereas Skoda just keeps on improving. And deservedly so too!
Brad, you know what I mean - internationally Skoda are doing very well. They're both doing crap in Australia but that's more excusable for Opel as they've been here only a few months; we all know how long Skoda has been here. I've seen one Opel - an Insignia Select saloon that is owned by Opel Australia - on the roads.

Honestly, I didn't.
All that matters is the AUS market as far as I'm concerned. If they fold in AUS then it does matter if the sell a billion cars everywhere else.
Strangely, I've seen many Opels (the little ones) - possibly as many each day as I see Skoda.

Well, there we go, 2012 sales figure. 2011 sales + 1. That's a horrible result, considering 2011's sale figure wasn't anything to be excited about.
Opel has sold more cars than Skoda in November, that is very concerning. They've only been in here for 2 months and they outsold Skoda already, and Opel is doing a lot worse worldwide. What is going on here?
That article is saying that Skoda is depending on Rapid to boost up its sales. All I can say is, unless Rapid is priced reasonably (something like $17990 drive away or $19990 drive away with DSG), it's not gonna do well.
But looks like VW wants to kill Skoda here, (in order to push up their sale into the top 5) the Rapid will probably priced at $22990 manuel with barebone equipment plus ORC. You would expect to pay $45000+ drive away for a fully loaded Rapid. (And you still have to add $1000 to retrofit a RVC cuz Skoda won't offer it)
The new Octavia will probably start at $30990 for a 1.4TSI Manuel, and $47990 RS TDI with DSG.
And we will see Skoda bailing out of the Australian market soon!
BTW, who is the new boss in Skoda Aus now? Didn't know that Matt Wiesner got sacked. But whoever the boss is only a puppet. VW Aus has the real power. So nothing will change.
2011 + 1 - Skoda must be happy with that result. Will Skoda still exist in the Australian market in 5 years time? I personally prefer Skoda to VW, but obviously the Australian population as a whole does not agree.
I haven't seen any Opels as of yet (apart from driving past a dealership).
