I had a small amount needed when I first got mine, haven't really needed to do it between services though (12mths/15k) since. My wife now drives it shorter distances so it might pick up again. I hadn't needed to check oil for years either, neither our Mazda 323 nor the 6 ever dropped a skeric 6-7yrs ownership of either. However they did have the oil changed every 6mths not 12mths so they may have over time but you just never saw it.
Yes there are colours, usually all bad things annoying giant yellow/orange fuel pump flashes when low on fuel, and bad red ones for things really wrong.
European engines have always used oil in a way the Japanese engines generally don't. The rule of thumb for all our European cars over that last 30ish years is 1 litre of oil per 10,000km of travel.
It's the same with European brakes vs Japanese brakes. The Europeans use the disc as a wear item and they are softer than Japanese discs and need to be replaced more often.
The manual mentions some oil consumption is normal (I think it says something like 1l/10k km). I topped mine up at 10k with about 300ml (according to the markings on the Penrite bottle!) and another 200ml at 13k.

Mine has never used or needed a drop of oil. Checked it this morning (8,000km since its 15,000km service) and it's still at the highest level. So not ALL european engines use oil. My engine must have been screwed together on a Monday.

After two+ years on this forum I've finally been spotted! Nice to have another RS in such proximity. How close to Midway? I'm just down Quarry Rd near Lane Cove Rd. Small world .
And even on our pre-FL RS the MFD does flash red if something's amiss so it is colour I guess.
Hah!!
I totally saw it!!
Parked out the front of the house, on a slope. Right?

+1.
mine was built in the same week as urs, but on the friday.
maybe that was a week of the "don't lose oil" batch of engines, going through the assembley hall.
i checked mine last night, 12k since my 15k service.
still high
Right on 5000km and bing, the oil light came on yesterday. With the Tiggy, had to top it up with oil very close to each service (like 13-14k for the 15k service etc, but after 5k!!!! That's insane to use that much oil in the first 5ks.
I assume its (147TSI) the same engine oil as the Tiggy TSI? Penrite 5W-30?

How much oil did you top up? Probably not more than 1L, not insane at all.
Haven't topped up yet as I was checking on the correct oil. Just checked the manual and it's the same oil as the Tiggy so all good to be topped up now.
