Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MDI Cable/Interface for Octavia RS

    Hi Gents

I've got the Bolero stereo in my Octavia RS (RCD510 I believe) and I was wondering how to get the MDI Interface going.

Can I just buy a MDI cable on eBay for $20 - $30, plug in it and it'll work? If so:

    1) Where does it plug into the stereo?

    2) Currently when I select Media on the stereo, I cannot see the 'Media In' option as a selection. All I get are CD, AUX In, SD Card & BT Audio. Will Media In automatically appear when when the MDI cable is plugged in?

At the moment the music off my iPhone streams via the Bluetooth to the stereo and works well via the BT Audio button. But the next/previous track buttons on the steering wheel don't work with the Bluetooth and I need to do the track selection on the iPhone.

BTW tried to find a post about this on the forum but couldn't - must admit I didn't look too hard.

    Thanks

If you have the MDI installed yes, buying the cable for you particualr device on ebay (rather than the $100 3 cable kits from a dealer) will see it working when you select "Media". Others on here have found using the SD card option good too.

As Inego said. If you already have the MDI installed (check in the glovebox for the port to plug in the proprietry interface cable) then all you need is an Ebay cable and away you go. MDI will then show up as long as a device is physically connected.

They were charging $100 per cable last time I looked.

Thanks for that. I just checked the glovebox and I don't have a MDI plug in the glovebox. This being the case I'll ring a few dealers to see how much it'll cost to have one installed. I assume a VW dealer could do this too not just a Skoda dealer? Thanks

You could try sending an email. I bought a Bluetooth unit and harness from here and shipping to Oz via UPS converted to a shade under AUD40. The gear arrived 6 days after ordering.

I haven't looked too hard for the fancy one, but here's the non-fancy one via CarSystems eBay store. Note the shipping to Oz is EUR30, which is about AUD 40. Same for the BT units.

This message is to make my post viable. Apparently its too small.

                          OK

the fancy one wont fit in my centre console, and theres no place for it in the glovebox

i cant disassemble it as it doesnt have the special mount point like the 'non-fancy' kit does

so, im going to remove my glovebox and drill holes and mount the fancy box anyway lol

ill take pics once its done. im just scared that im cutting up my new car. this modding **** never stops
