Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I don't get what all the fuss is about with rear cameras. OK if you drive a Range Rover or something it might help prevent you reversing over toddlers, but on a standard road car I don't see the point. If someone can't park a car using their 3 mirrors, parking sensors and their own two eyes and rotating neck, then should they really have a license?

I was almost going to agree and then I thought if the sensors are beeping but you don't see anything, it saves having to get out of the car to find out what is there. A few times now I have reversed into a car space with a garden behind the car and a couple of leaves have sent the sensors off early.

I'm agreeing. Not a deal breaker for me and I think you'd end up completely relying on the camera rather than looking in every direction and checking your mirrors.

But I have been known to get a kick out of watching someone reverse park badly.... and also appreciate drivers who do it well (an ever dwindling number judging by the number of bumper scrapes you see on city cars)....

And while on the subject of "But"... included gadgets can be the competitive edge required for some purchases...

Very true, and this is the very reason I went for the Octavia RS. For the price, I simply could not find anything else on the market that had what it has!

The point is that I can confirm a reason for reverse cameras, rather than just a beeper. You could use the same argument with the reverse sensors; I only "use/need" them once in every 20 or more parks but hey - the car industry obviously saw the need for them and I expect the camera will follow.

After recovering for the last 6 months from a smashed tib/fib, anything to reduce the burden of getting in and out of the car is good! Driving has been great since getting back behind the wheel a month ago. Getting in and out hasn't been as much fun.
