Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Skoda Octavia Options? v2. (test drive done too)

    OK,

As a continuation of the other thread which was removed due to the great forum fire (GFF), I'm just recreating this in order to discuss the skoda options.

This is what I've deduced so far (* means I'm getting it):
    - * Leather - $1300ish - def. getting
    - Satnav is standard as is 30gb hdd
    - * Bluetooth can be installed seperately
    - Towbar is overpriced and won't be installed.
    - Front parking sensors have to be installed at the factory to integrate with the LCD screen $600ish
    - Xenon headlights are not bi-xenon headlights, so they aren't light-to-day bright. They do have a cornering function though. $1700ish
    - * Fog lights have a cornering function @ $600ish
    - * Boot liner is $150 from the shop for a hard plastic boot liner.
    - The media interface for your ipod etc is about $250. I won't be buying it though.
    - * Tinting is optional at time of purchase. I think I'll just buy it with the car though so tinted from the factory (supposedly).
    - * Metallic paint is about $680ish
    - * DSG at $2300.

So I test drove a '10 147tsi DSG version on saturday. It's Nice. Very Nice. I Sat down with the dealer and nutted out a drive away quote for a 2011 model to be ordered.

I'm unsure if I should get a plane jane manual, but I have to say I was definitely impressed with the shifting of the DSG. Once that traction control kicked in () it was a bit of a rocket! A Perfect daily driver with comfort, handling and zip. I didn't notice any torque steer either, though that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

That brake pedal is bloody sensitive! . It took me a few slow downs to adjust after a few lurches in the car . I knew they worked though!

That sounds expensive. I got the turning feature just for a joke mainly because our Audi doesn't have it and I'm sure it was only $200-$300. I don't think I would have bothered at $600.
What happens with this option is that if you are driving slowly (under 40km?) with the lights on when you turn the steering wheel left or right the appropriate fog light comes on (NOTHING ACTUALLY TURNS IT'S JUST A LIGHT SWITCH). It's handy for turning into drive ways on dark roads but it is a feature I could live without. Nissan Maxima's had the same feature in 1991 btw.
From what I have read on Briskoda it may be something that can be turned on or off in the firmware of the car using a VAG COM device so that also makes the $600 sound $x to me.

When I went for my first test drive, I found I had to really get used to that brake pedal! So very sensitive!

At the end of the day, I think it comes down to whether you prefer auto or manual. The DSG is great, I drove a few with it and they are such a nice auto to drive but then again, so is the manual! Which ever path you choice, I don't think you would be disappointed!

So did you also decide what colour you will be getting it in? (the hardest part!)

My U13 Nissan Bluebird had the same thing - handy but not worth $600.

I'm pretty sure it's a vagcom / VCDS setting too. I'm sure i saw it in the menus when i was having a browse a few months back. You might be better buying a VCDS cable instead ($300-ish) or find somebody with a cable

          '

Nissan went through a phase with turning lights in the early 90's. The Patrol had them at one stage as well so did the il fated Pintara.

To stay on topic I'm almost positive it's just a setting. For a couple of hundred dollars I was happy to give them some gross but I wouldn't pay what's been asked in this case.

            Fail with the Xenon description...
Bi-Xenon = Low Beam AND Main (High) Beam.
            Xenon = Low Beam only.

Bi-Xenon has nothing to do with the light intensity, it just means it uses xenons for high & low beam. Octavias with Xenons use Halogen globes for the High Beam.

that's wrong. Foglights are standard on the vRS. the "cornering function" (code FLC) is the only option at $240.
sounds like dealer is charging u for both the foggies and the function!!

i was quoted $490 for front parking sensors (code PDF)! don't forget the rear parking sensors are standard on the vRS.
sounds like dealer is charging u for both front and rear!!

as ausspace mentioned - "bi-xenon" means it can do both beam types, rather than the intensity of the brightness!
the "dynamic" function of the xenons r very cool and handy indead.

I had some of my pricing options wrong. 240 is correct for the lights.

Thanks for clearing things up for me, it helps to make better choices

That sounds way closer to what I remembered the charge to be.

                      Hi all,

No rear view camera? Not even as an option? Am i correct in saying this?

If so there goes more than 50% of aus sales (imo only of course).

                        that's a big statement!!
its also a worry to let the rear view camera b the deciding factor!!!

I dont seeing a reversing camera as a deciding factor. What about safety, fuel economy, build quality and pricing? In my opinion, reversing sensors are more then adequate. I dont even think there are alot of cars that have reversing cameras that are in the same price range are there?

Imagine how many extra Commodores and Falcons they would sell if they had rear view cameras. Their sales would be so strong that no other manufacturer would bother with the Australian market.
