Rasping / Rattling noise on RS?

Not meaning to sound like a Debbie Downer with my problems, but my car has started making this loud (on the inside, even louder on the outside with the windows down) rasping / rattling type of noise when I'm accelerating. Makes it around 2500rpm for only a short burst then goes away when the DSG shifts gears, only to reappear in the next gear. When I got home I revved it a couple of times in the garage but I couldn't replicate same noise - maybe it's when the engine is under load? It sounds like I'm driving an old crappy Beetle or something & almost sounds like the engine is pinging, but the noise is far too loud for that to be the case...
I've been taking it very easy for the first 1000km like the owners manual advises, only clicked over the 1000km mark today & have only filled up with 98 Ultimate fuel.
Any thoughts? Looks like I'm going to have a bit of a list of problems when I go to Skoda this week. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come...

I certainly have never babied a motor on run in.. I have a mechanical engineering background and know why manufactures say the blanket claims of taking it easy, its to build up carbon on the piston rings to make the engine a tiny bit quieter.. Especially diesel..
But seriously.. give it a good kick mate, if you want your performance motor to perform ( especially turbo motors) you need to keep the carbon out of your exhaust, if you dont get the flow rate up you will only fill up the exhaust with carbon which it will struggle to clear when you do boot it.

On the noises side.. don't be affraid to go straight back to the dealer.

I have known a few cases where the dealer didn't check the oil for predelivery, in fact just recently drove a hire car Octy in QLD that had the oil light coming on when I picked it up at 2000km......yes you would think Europcar should have noticed the massive red oil can light....let alone the delivering dealer checking the oil levels.

mine which is an RS DSG wagon which has now covered 11,000kms does something similar and has done for as long as i can remember. It is coming from the exhaust I reckon and just doesn't sound that sporty. It makes the noise in each gear and not for very long ie only between a very narrow rev range. I will check the rev range toninght. I thought about asking the dealer about it but kind of got used to it.

Let me know what your dealer/Skoda reckons.

Mine is a TSI and makes a similar noise when you're on part throttle. Its made it from day dot and its too hard to fart around getting time off work to check it out with the dealer.

All fluids are fine. Sounds like some sort of exhaust backpressure thing going on.

10000k's on the clock with no problems. *shrug*

+ 1 If you read the owners manual you are now at the stage that you should be revving the engine nearly to the RED Line before changing (whever possible). I will admit this can be a bit difficult in certain areas due to the speed restrictions. Dont want you to loose your license, but seriously dont baby it you need to rev it to get the best out of the vehicle.

Take it for a long quiet drive and enjoy the vehicle you have.

If the noise doesnt go away after that go and see the dealer (as canberravrs said).

Found freeway entrance ramps good for the running in. You can get nearly to 100 in 1st!

Fortunately no strange noises for me after 13000kms (TDI man) although can't help think it must be the exhaust based on how you explain it. Don't muck about, bring it back to the dealer and get them to jump in the car with you - dont just leave it with them.

Our RS TSI DSG makes the same noise.

I have pointed it out to the dealer twice. On one occasion I took him for a drive to point out the noise. They said on both occasions that it is normal.

It annoys me terribly as it did not make the noise when we first got it, and it seems to getting worse...

Could be psychological about getting worse though as it's one of those noises that once its been heard you hear it every time.

Before the warranty is up I will go to an independent VAG mech to get their advice on it.

sounds like a rattly heat shield.

agree with others re: run-in. don't baby, don't thrash - keep the pressure on. Slow run-in = slow engine

Thanks guys, I know how to run in an engine. When I said I'm taking it easy I only meant I'm not driving around with the tacho needle dancing all over the redline in every gear...
Will let you know what the service guys say when I hopefully go there this week.

i've got a similar raspy noise. though i have to listen for it - otherwise its not noticeable.
when i do hear it - i hear it coming through the passenger side window.
i haven't been "babying" mine. i've given all 6 gears a good workout. pulled her hard to the left....and to the right. braked hard....not to the point of activating the abs though.

it doesn't sound like a "to be concerned" noise. but if its still audible at my 1st service, i'll point it out and see wat they say.

Yeah the noise was a lot less noticeable when my car was brand new, I thought it was just the noise of the exhaust, but after a couple of weeks it's now become much louder.

Sounds like a common issue. On mine, it doesn't sound to me like a rattly housing, sounds more internal, like some sort of exhaust swirl (if thats a thing ).
