and I may have forgotten how to upload photos....

And I cannot resist saying that I highly recommend the 205 55 16 option for anyone who regularly spends time at 100+ km/h off the motorway….

I upload pics to Facebook, in a hidden album. Saves fiddling around with photobucket and whatnot.

There are no decent aftermarkets for the Octy, in 16" or even 17"!... I've been looking.
Unfortunate, really. Personally I don't think the stock rims suit the vRS.
2012 Octavia vRS TDI. Darkside big turbo, 3bar tune, other stuff. 200kW/650Nm.
      1990 Mk1 Cabrio. 1.9 IDI w/ 18PSI.
      1985 Mazda T3500 adventuremobile. 1973 Superbug. 1972 Volvo 144 in poo-brown.
      Not including hers...

Thanks for that. I saw DunlopRS's pic as well before it was removed. Both placards only in English, same part number, and showing a min speed rating and a min load index.

My placard in Czech, Russian, German, and English must have missed getting changed. Nothing from the dealer yet.

        • The PS3s from Michelin are the official replacement for the Michelin PE2s I had from factory so if they don't meet specs then something is up.

Whether or not a particular model of tyre is designated by the tyre manufacturer as an 'official' replacement has no relevance to the vehicle manufacturer's original recommendation or the local regulations.

            The vehicle manufacturer recommends a 225/40 R18 92Y XL tyre - this doesn't change.
However, the regulations in QLD, NSW and VIC allow you to fit a tyre with a lesser speed symbol.

As far as the law is concerned, there is no issue in fitting 225/40 R18 92W XL tyres in QLD, NSW or VIC on a Skoda Octavia RS.

The only issue here is the missing information on BottomScratcher's tyre placard.

I agree 100%. The entire point of all this, bearing in mind that 225/40 R18 isn't a common size in Australia (let alone Y speed rated ones) was to find a reference point from where to start considering replacements for the Y rated tyres that are on the car now. Without the minimum legal specs stated on the car, any speculation as to what's legal and what's not is just that, speculation. I didn't, and still don't intend to make a landmark legal case out of it.

When I was talking to a suspension specialist the other day he told me that the PS2's are/were a very successful tyre, and that Michelin only went to the PS3 due to an EU directive necessitating changes to the manufacturing processes to protect factory workers from carcinogens in fumes and dust created during tyre manufacture. A lot of Good Years are made in Germany, so they too were affected. Good Year went from the Eagle F1 Asymmetric to the Eagle F1 Asymmetric2, and the other manufacturers (notably Pirelli, and Continental) also primarily manufactured their existing lines in accordance with the new process, and just gave them another product name.

              • So, for anyone who had Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT as OEM and has gone to PS3s (or RE002s), how has wear rate/longevity compared? I only got 25k kms out of the dunlops (seems Canberra is particularly hard on tyres……) – have gone to a conti touring tyre and I am much happier on them than the Dunlops but they are a little hard.

It's all those big roundabouts mate. I had a 4 wheel alignment done last week, and the tech suggested I run the recommended pressure in the back (220kpi/32psi) and to run 250kpi/36psi in the fronts instead of the recommended 210kpi/30psi. He said it should help the front tyres in coping with cornering force, and so reduce some of the wear, particularly on the front outer shoulders of them.

                  • Yeah – fast roundabouts and we seem to have a coarser texture bitumen than most – not sure if its cheaper or if it is to reduce effects of ice on those -8oC mornings……

I run 38 psi all round in the 205/55 16s for normal load, increase for long trip. The way the tyres are wearing there is no sign of over inflation. I would have felt like I was going to roll the 225/40 18s off the rim if I only had 30 in them..... but thats me....

I run 34 front and back and have good even wear and lots of tread with the PE2s at 50k, if I could still get them I would they have been awesome tyres.

                      • ....the missing info can easily be sought after by anyone placing a phone call or sending an email to any Skoda dealer.
I'm glad that I hadn't put a nail through a tyre and had to avoid 110kph tollways for 5 days while running on the max speed 80kph spare for 5 days waiting for a reply.

I got a call late Tuesday advising that the placard is indeed the wrong one. The right one will will be ordered in. I asked if it would be posted to me, but alas not. As replacing the part is a warranty issue it needs to be done in their workshop, and they need to redeem the part that is being replaced. I wasn't given any details of the missing info.

                        Easy!

Is that what you would've done in case of a puncture?

Just as you assumed getting the info from the dealer would be easy, did you also assume that my hypothetical puncture could only happen in the tread area?

Unless the dealer has the work experience kid in front of the computer, it should take no more than three minutes to find the information in ElsaWin.

As for what to do in case someone is faced with a missing/damaged/incomplete/illegible/incomprehensible tyre placard, there are ways around that. It's not the end of the world.

We're in total agreement then. That was precisely my point.
