  • Is a CR diesel engine worth waiting for?

    Hi, it looks like 'week 22' and on build Octavias (including Scouts) will have the new 2.0-liter TDI CR DPF engine. Can anyone out there advise whether it's likely to make a big enough difference (performance, economy, noise?) that I should order a new one (vs a demo or current stock)?

    It's basically gonna be the Golf 103TDI engine now, right?

    To this, yes. So 20Nm more torque IIRC, plus quieter and smoother running, with a 500rpm higher redline.

    Whether it's worth waiting for is up to you - I'm pretty happy with my PD, so it would probably come down to the deal you can do.....

      Hmm I didn't realise they were still used the PD, I thought at least the normal Octavias were all pretty much CR since launch here. I have heard a few people wish they could have got the PD to avoid the DPF issues.

        My PD Scout has a DPF and I had big issues early on......

          Common rail has the benefits of better off boost performance, far better fuel mixtures and power at any given rpm, better fuel metering and economy and much quieter running. It will actually be FAR better for a DPF overe the GT PD with a DPF, as I reckon it'll produce less soot overall. Also will allow FAR more chip tuning potential long term. The "MKV" 103kw non DPF is obviously a car that escapes the DPF potential problems.

          The downside is the MK6 has even more antipollution gear, and if something contaminates the CR pump or injectors, it really gets messed up. Expensive repairs.

          Currently, aftermarket tuners are getting more torque out of the PD engines, but I bet that will change. Antipollution and even more complex ECU's will hamper the process though.

            Yes, it was for me. I held out over 4 months to get a 2.0 CRD Octavia vRS wagon.

              When was the common rail engine introduced to Australian models? I'm looking at a 2008 Octavia Elegance 2 litre diesel (build date Oct. '07). Would that be common rail?

              According to Wikipedia it was 2010. Does that sound right?

                No the 07 is not CR

                The CR engine arrived with the FL MY10 cars. My Dec 09 registered vRS has a CR engine.

                  So what do yuz reckon about this (2008 Elegance AWD $25k with 54,500 km and a few extras):

                  It's got the older type 2l diesel, no warranty left, no xenons (which I'd like, though they're rare).

                  I offered $22k. Given that there are a couple of sub 20,000 km '09/'10 Scouts around listed at $32k how much more is it worth? - and yes I know the answer is 'whatever you're willing to pay'

                    The option list is impressive, I would say it is a good buy as long the condition is as advertised.

                      I've just upped the offer to $23,500 and said if they need it until they go overseas that would be ok (maybe with a price adjustment). That could save me cash and give them a sure sale.

                        Most of the things listed in the options are fairly standard items but it looks very clean and having the 4x4 system would be an advantage imo. You can't get the 4x4 wagons any more except on Scout spec.

                          I saw that one the other day on a casual Carsales search and man is that a rare car! Not only is it optioned-up but it's also 4x4! Its also one of the first Octavia Elegance 4x4 models I've ever seen on Carsales so you've done well and I hope it goes well .

                            Yep they weren't around for that long, they were sold until the Scout came out. I almost went that option instead of the RS...

                              It's only the 103kw diesel. I can't remember if that was more or less dollars than the 118TSI but at the time they were discounting petrol cars & not diesel.

                              By comparison, I have a Nov 2007 build / June 2008 complied 118TSi Elegance hatch with 75,000km. It cost me just over $30k OTR and is now worth about $16k-$18k as a private sale. IIRC, wagon body was about $1500 more; AWD was ~$1500 more; metalic paint was ~$600; sunroof was ~$1700; factory GPS RNS510 was ~$2900; leather + heat was ~$2700; electric/memory drivers seat was ~$700; F&R park sensors were ~$900. The roof cross bars are worth $300-$500 too

                              So you've got a $33k wagon with about $10k worth of options. The AWD, metalic paint, sunroof & heated / memory seats can't be retro-fitted without a lot of grief or expense. Even the aftermarket integration of the parking sensors into the HU usually ends in tears.

                              I would think that $25k isn't unreasonable given the uniqueness of the vehicle but it does have a 60,000km service coming up & the AWD system will need attention as part of the 60k, so don't expect any change out of $1000. At a guess, an agreement somewhere between your $22k & his $25k will be fair to both parties.
