  • Insurance for your Skoda...

Out of curiosity, who did you use to insure your Skoda?

I couldn't find any threads as yet. Been calling around for my Octavia RS, but after reading through numerous PDS, some of them are not very nice at all (eg AAMI), even though the premiums are good...

I ended up using CGU by way of australian unity, as i get 10% off their already decent price. The one thing im not overly happy about with them, is they wont cover the cost of a hire car if i need it.

Budget Direct, they have provision for a hire car (extra ~$1/wk). They were very good with a small accident I had a couple of years ago.

GIO, $980 yearly. I wouldn t touch Budget Direct, or read the fine print if you do. They want to insure your car for market value and when you call up to see what their market value is ,it will make you cry. Its not worth saving a couple of hundred only to find that your car is WAY underinsured when it is written off.

Thats where to start IMO. Insure for agreed value. Check and reassess it every year. I've heard stories of very large bills after a write offs to cover leases/loans.

Actually - that makes me think (after having recently gone through buying another house). Do finance companies now require you to have agreed value insurance before taking the lease?

MMMM... better check that out. Insurance is due in June, not that I want to write my car off anyway! . Anyone used Ecar?

RACV and way closer to $600 than $800 per year.
First two years are replacement so I'm not concerned at this stage what they think it's worth.

That's what I thought with AAMI, first 2 years are replacement, until I read the PDS. On AAMI, the first 2 years are replacement with the same options and accessories, but the car must be available locally, or they will pay out rather than order. Considering that the payout figure is over 10k less that what I paid for it, and knowing that with the options I have, it wont be available locally, I decided not to go with them...

So, I'm still looking. Still have a couple of weeks... The GIO site keeps on coming up with errors

Obviously not owning one I haven't got a skoda insured, but I have had my car through GIO for the last 10 years & in the event of an accident their service has been great. Never an argument about a claim. Same went for my motorbike which the assessor actually gave me the option of writing off or not (at the time market value was more than I originally paid, so I didn't mind).

AAMI was the same with another motorbike I owned. Chased me to get paperwork finished so they could pay me out. That time at agreed value.

Still, been a while since I examined the PDS in any detail on either, although my bikes just got switched to just bikes to reduce my premium substantially & improve coverage for gear as well as the bike itself.

Yeah, GIO seem to be pretty good for me here in NSW too...

Hello, We picked up our Skoda just last Friday. We are in QLD.

We went with AAMI. They were the cheapest agreed value offer we could find, and was our current insurer.

NRMA was the cheapest but would only do market value. These two insurers were much less (<$550 vs >$1000) than the most others we consulted (Virgin, Budget Direct, etc). Youi was around $600.

GIO does not offer policies in QLD, and the Suncorp website (GIO's owner) kept kicking us out.

It seems that your location makes a pretty big difference in having more choice.

Yeah that kept happening to me too, until I used a different browser, then it worked fine. (That's a bit of a worry)

It does look that way, really depends on which state you are in... In NSW, when I tried, it was the other way around. AAMI would only offer market value and NRMA was happy to insure the car at an agreed value. I do wish that they would standardise...

Ha standards, I wish!! But that's unlikely as as every suburb has a different insurance rating.. let alone state. And each insurance company calculates its suburb rating individually based upon its history of theft and damage etc etc.
