You can do that all you want but it won't do anything as the doors are deadlocked and can't be opened from the inside once the car is locked.

If you just open the rear hatch (like on the golf) it only unlocks the hatch and when you close it (and if you were absent minded enough to leave your key in the back) the hatch relocks and you're unable to get back in without a key or smashing a window.

All detailed in the owners manual, I always take extra to make sure my key is in my pocket before closing the hatch and open the doors if I'm getting into the car.

Yeah i'm a bit more careful when using the rear hatch button, but it's almost not worth using it for this reason.

If I had it towed home or to a dealer, it would've sat for weeks whilst waiting for a new remote, and as my wife uses it daily, that would not have gone down well. To say that she wasn't impressed anyway is a major understatement!
The dealer would have smashed a window to get in or they would have drilled the lock or had a key cut (maybe). There are a few ways to get into the car when in the workshop.

To answer a few comments, We tried to push the central locking on the console, but couldn't get enough pressure on the wire
As I mentioned in the other post the doors are deadlocked and cannot be opened from inside the car when the car is locked.

Consider the insurance implications in the future of leaving keys in the car (especially in plain sight) as they won't pay out if you have left the keys in the car and it's stolen.

just wondering how you could lock both sets in, and dont you press the remote lock button after you exit the car??

            1. Assume wife has her key in her handbag.
            2. Lock car
            3. Forget bag in wagon area. Open tailgate, put key on floor to put something in bag.
            4. shut tailgate. .05 sec later realise what you just did.
            5. Ask wife for her spare. Fun then starts

^These things happen i guess. I try and put the key in my pocked instead of the boot floor if i can remember, just in case.

Something to be wary of using a blade.... Not sure if it is the same with VAG cars, but with my Toyota it is fine to open the vehicle with the non chipped blade - but a big NO NO to put this key in the IGN and try to start it. My locksmith told me doing this would damage the imobiliser in such a way as it would require a >$1,000 replacement. Am somewhat dubious as to this being fact but not game to try disprove it. So in the mean time my blade key is attached to my kitesurfing harness by a short lead. My theory is I am unlikely to drive car with kiting harness on and therefore will only use it to unlock the boot.

Sounds like bull**** to me and doesn't apply to VAG cars in any case.

When you start the car a coil is magnatised around the ignition switch which energises the rfid component of the kefob. If the correct code is not received by the car within 2 seconds of the engine starting the car will stop and a warning will display on the dash. No damage is caused and you can do this as much as you like.

If you know the "key cut code" then a lot of locksmiths can easily cut you a "dead" key that will get you into the car (but won't run the engine for more than 2 seconds without the correct immobiliser chip. On my VW plastic tab that came with my van when it was new it was the last 4 digits of the number that looked like:
                        42
                        0xxx

There was a number that looked the same with my Skoda, but the key code was totally different (just to confuse things), and there were three other numbers as well, just to make it even trickier.

If you keep your wallet on you at all times maybe it is worth keeping a spare blade in it (and also reading up in the owners manual on how to use it if your car has a "hidden" external lock).

I agree with Mav, I've done this many, many times with both my VW and with my Skoda with absolutely no problems. It is difficult to find working immobiliser chips for late model VAG vehicles, and the only way to see if they were coded correctly to the ECU is to try to start your car. The engine will start, then cut out within 2 seconds with an immobilser error. No harm done.

And yes, I did find a much cheaper non-VAG source for my VW immobilisers (unfortunately no longer able to supply them), but had no luck whatsoever getting one that worked for my Skoda. I now have lots of key housings, blades, immobiliser chips (useless) and remotes as spares

Yeah it was probably the locksmiths way of trying to get me to buy a $110 chipped key instead of the $5 plain one which is all I needed.

Hmm I that is pretty much what I would have guessed, the auto boot locking thing scares me. My wife has a nasty habit of putting her keys in the boot in our 6, I can see her doing it with the Skoda and having the same problem. I keep the spare key for my wifes 6 in our house in case of emergencies, my wife however keeps the Skoda spare in her handbag, so I have envisioned this scenerio many times. Enough to say she has now put her spare with mine in the house after reading this.

I would imagine your day sucked pretty much, but I think the right way about it happened, going the Skoda dealer would have ended much the same way, just with the tow as well.

The very first weekend I had my R32 I drove with my girlfriend down to Rye. Got out, locked the car and went and bought the newspaper. Came back to the car, unlocked the boot/hatch, put the paper in with the key on top to look at something, shut the boot. Oh sh*t! Unlocking the hatch doesn't unlock the doors. Why must we find out the hard way?

Sunroof was tilted open so thought I might be able to push the unlock door button (didn't know at the time this wouldn't have worked anyway). I borrowed a broom from the shop owner and stuck the broom handle in, and set off the motion detector. Alarm screaming, girlfriend screaming, me swearing. Everything was in the car. Money, mobile phones and the key!

Rang VW assist and they said you're screwed without the other key. (BTW I am amazed they even bothered sending someone out to your car). All they said was get the other key or start breaking some glass!

At least they paid about $150 for my taxi to get the spare key but needless to say ruined the afternoon.

The wife and I always share the one key and the spare stays in a very safe place! Good experience for the Octy!

Did the same thing when we first got the Golf. It was parked in our drive blocking our other car so we couldnt go get the 2nd key at the inlaws without them knowing and looking like a dill.
