Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Sydney mechanic recommendations

    Hi everyone

Can anyone recommend any honest and trustworthy mechanics in Sydney who offer log book servicing and are familiar with MQB mods?

    Car is a RS169.

Just got slugged $411 for a 10k kms dealership service.

    Thanks

Recently also paid $411 for the 20k (2 year) service. Would be interested to know what 'independent' mechanics are charging and how service record is maintained for warranty work as everything at VAG is recorded electronically.

I am in the Penrith area.

All of these places have been regularly used by users on this forum.

Euro Car Full Service Mechanic in SydneyVW Village @ Kensington

VW Audi Skoda Specialist | Sydney | Wolfsburg Motors @ St Peters

European Autotech: Audi Service Sydney | VW Service Sydney | Specialised Audi And VW Mechanics Sydney |Mona Vale @ Mona Vale

European Luxury Car Service Centre Sydney | BWA Auto @ Seven Hills

I guess Wolfsburg Motors would be the most convenient for you if you live near Hurstville.

            Tks for that info

I wonder how their prices compare to the dealer's. No doubt cheaper but by much and then at what cost if something goes wrong?

I guess I will stick with my local Nepean Motor Group. Main reason being, at the 2 year service they discovered my radar unit wasn't working correctly and it was replaced under warranty.

Just have this feeling rightly or wrongly that this fault may/may not have been found by an independent service provider and how easy/difficult it would have been to have it replaced/recalibrated through an independent.

Each to their own of course, and i know many people choose to stay with the dealer while the car is under warranty - but after several experiences with my local VW dealer (when i owned my Golf R and Golf GTI) I wont be going back there unless absolutely necessary (eg something that my independent mechanic cant sort out).

I have my wife's Audi SQ5 (which is no longer under warranty) serviced by a local independent VW/Audi specialist. Their workmanship is great (and im fussy), they use the correct VW approved oils etc and OEM filters etc and they are cheaper than the dealership. Ok you dont get the fancy showroom, a coffee while you wait, and a lift back to work - but behind the scene's there's a qualified mechanic (and usually the owner of the business) working on your car. The quality of the actual service is more important to me, and I don't want to play inflated dealer prices to have an apprentice working on my car.

At least with an independent workshop, the guy you give your keys to is generally the one who will be servicing it - they have years of experience and know the cars well.

I agree that when out of warranty I would never use a dealer. In fact I always did my own servicing from there on as I knew exactly what was going into and onto the car These days with longer warranty periods I seem to move my cars onto my kids before the warranty runs out.

Just wanted to share my experience - you really don't need dealership servicing to maintain your warranty. We learned this after having some frustrating experiences with our Audi at the dealer so we switched to Phil at Autobahn Diagnostics in Brookvale on the Northern Beaches. They only work on VW/Audi Group cars, so they really know their stuff. We get both our Golf and S5 serviced there now, and honestly, the service has been fantastic, plus Phil is one of those exceptionally honest, genuinely nice guys - which is so rare to find. Much better experience than the dealership and never had a single issue.
