Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • E-TAGS!!! Where the hell do you put one in the Octavia RS???

I was going to install the e-tag last weekend, I didn't really get time so I just put it in the console and held it up when I needed it. Last night I had a look around where to put it, but there is no room above or behind the rear view mirror! There is all of the cameras and sensors installed in a large plastic box.

Anywhere I can put it is going to be in my direct line of sight!!!!

What has everyone else done with theirs?

I put mine to the left of the plastic 'box' at the highest point on the windscreen half in the dotted part. It doesn't interfere with my line of sight in any way there.

What others above have said. Either side of the sensors all the way at the top

Keep in mind the way the tag slides off the bracket. If you put it on the wrong side you may not be able to slide it off (and have to rip off the bracket) to replace it.

          Cheers Guys.

I'll have a go at it this weekend. I may try and get a new Smaller e-tag, I still have the huge beige old style ones.

I have only just gone from the large tag to the new smaller one and like you didn't like putting the large older one on the windscreen. They told me that the large ones usually last about 5-6 years. Mine was 11 years old when it gave up the ghost. No problem getting it changed LOL

Sweet! Many thanks. I'll order a new one and just use the old one like I'd been using it in the previous car...Hold it up when needed. The only problem is the amount of new toll roads is making that a pain!!

Do you think that it'll be an issue pray painting it matt black?

You technically don't own the tag...... But you can be the first to see if you can spray it and I'll follow once you confirm it still works.

Best of luck with that You have to send the old one back before you get a new one. On the LINKT (govias new name) there is a page to apply for a new tag and instructions how to send the old one back free. They dont send a new one till you do. I did it 3 weeks ago and it took two weeks all up. You wont get toll defects as they know whats going on.

If you just say you lost it as you want to keep it they will simply cancel its serial number in the system so it wont work

Easier, smarter ways to pay for Australia toll roads - Linkt and got to" tags" in r/h menu

That's not the case for NSW and the etag. I have 4 tags including 2 old ones.

Exactly the style I have (the old RTA one), an oldie but a goodie! The sound they make when the money leaves your account is a bit more pleasant than the newer style.
I had the same dilemma when I fitted mine. I put it in a similar place as HPRS230, but not on the dots (I didn't want to rip/scrape the dots off if I ever have to remove the bracket). So, it's basically just below the corner of the dot area. When in the driver's seat, the rear view mirror obscures the tag nicely!
Try sticking the tag up temporarily with some duct tape and see if the position works for you.

To get a replacement etag you need to hand in your old one here in NSW unless of course you are happy to keep the old one and be out of pocket the $40 security deposit that you pay for each etag.

Back when we had our MKII RS the wife would drive over the Gateway in Brissie everyday (while I went the opposite down the Logan tollway!) with the tag in the middle top compartment of the dashboard. Both old and new style and never had a drama with it not working. Doesn't help you, but brought back memories of our RS.. which I handed down to my folks and they love it!

Was way too busy to look into this on the weekend. First thing is to get our old etag transferred to the new car.

Then I'll order a new more compact one.
